duh...

This reminds me of the time I was putting diesel in the diesel Topaz, yes, ford put diesels in Tempos, escorts and topazs for a few years. Some guy in Powerstroke drive by and says " Um, do you know that's diesel you're putting in your car?" He was really nice and just sort of offering advice. ("Hey, we all know where and which pumps are diesel, don't we?. ) I explained to him what it was and complimented his truck. We talked a bit about diesels and truck and said he had a friend with a Cummins that would outpull his Ford. Not trying to start and argument, just thought there might be SOMEBODY out there who would appreciate his comment.

A diesel Topaz!!!!:--) and I thought the guy down the road from me that has a Nissan Diesel powered International Scout was different.

Why on earth should we be insulted? We have the most power per qubic inch, heaviest built, best durability record, most proven, best sounding diesel pickup engine built. The guy was trying to pay you a compliment. :D

mblair, I've gotten the same comment when I filled up my El Camino that has a 6-33 Nissan in it! One time I had the station attendant come flying out the booth to try and stop me, boy was that look priceless!:D

I have seen a '78 Power Wagon with a Perkins (I think) diesel in it (came stock that way). Dodge, not Chevy or Ford, was the first fullsize American pickup to have a diesel option. . . though it was only 250ish displacement, no turbo = very gutless.

I have also seen an early '80s Jeep Cherokee and early '80s Volkswagen Vanago with diesel power. Neither one of these rigs could get out of their own way (I got stuck behind a diesel Vanagon on a twisty 2-laner once, talk about a traffic jam  )

Remember?

Do any of you remember the Dodge D-50 in the early seventys with the little turboed four banger Mitsibishi diesel? I wish I could find one. They were said to have no aceleration, but once you got them wrapped up they would pull hard.

JEEP's

In 1965 or so had perkins from the factory. I found a mid 60's dodge crew cab 4X4 for sale in good shape it also had a perkins in it from the factory. But the guy wanted 18K for it, a little rich for a play truck. But boy did it look cool.

From what I remember it was the early eighties. I had a cousin with one and that little booger would fly. It was a higher revving motor, but what could one expect out of a little four banger?

At the risk of offending you I bought a 1983 Mitsubishi turbo diesel 2WD in the mid 90's. I threw what was left of the diesel motor away and dropped a Ford 302 gas motor in it. By the time I sold it 6 years later it was on it's third Ford small block, a 5. 0 EFI motor from a Highway Patrol Mustang and a Mustang T5 trans, 4WDB with a Dana 44 in the back and Mustang power rack and pinion steering.

Now that I live at 4000 feet elevation and commute 90 miles per day i would like to find one of these Mitsus that is 4WD with the diesel for a decent price. Alas, though, I don't think these Mitsu motors are all that reliable so I think I might find an early 80's Nissan 4x4 pickup and put a Mercedes diesel in it instead.

mblair ---You poor fella.....

I see you had the same misfortune as I in that you owned a Peugeot Diesel( 504 D wagon - non turbo). Man what a mechanics dream they are... And to think they called that a Diesel. And let me be the first to tell you that aluminum HEADS on that Diesel - were a failure! I could go on and on - but as an example one day I smelled antifreeze. Opened the Hood and - GUESS WHAT? The Head had developed Pin Holes near the water pump and was spraying coolent all over the place. We tried everything to fix this - took a new head! You name it and it was replaced. I had eventually wound up with 3 of these (THINGS) to try and keep One Running! Before the scrap guy cam out to take them away - myself, my neighbors my kids - well we kind'a had an attitude adjustment hour by killing these cars with baseball bats, shotguns etc. THAT FELT GREAT!!!!!! I might add that if you ever got it running, rode very well. But they were like an old 32 HP VW transporter my grandfather had - if it smelled a hill, it slowed down. I even had an Peuogot 604 Turbo 4 Door, A great looking and riding car - but after about 3,000 miles (of my owning it - had 53,000 on it) it broke a crankshaft! And you think teh British have bad electronics - LUCAS is a King compared to the CRAP-O-LA they put on these things. I was having a nice day till you made me think of that ULCER CReating (&^%$#*^%!!!!!!
