Hey guys,

quick question. I got wind yesterday that supposedly my brother in law has purchased 3 new 3rd gens for his business, an 03 and two 04's. The part that I don't get, is that in another breath, I was told that the new 3rd gens are a piece of junk and that he is supposedly going through Arbritration for his 03 and one of his 04's having problems with the rods and and engine knocking.

Has anybody heard of any problems like these on these new trucks? Of course I started laughing at their stupidity. . but I just find it odd that he is having problems in which the searches on here can't find. Typically if there is a problem like this, boy is it handled quickly on the tdr.

It sounds like he's just a PO'd customer to me... you?

Kev

I think there were a couple people here with an engine knock and it turned out to be a bad or a leaking injector and was fixed with no problems.

Nick

My 04 has an intermittent knock. Sounds like an injector to me. Service department is searching for an answer.

They state that the engine knock hasn't set any codes and they can't diagnose. BS!

They will repair, replace, or have the most disgruntled mean spirited customer they have ever seen!

I think the problem hasn't been "bad" injectors, but simply "loose" injectors. Just need to be tightened down. Do a search. I think everyone who's seen this, has been cured right away. No worries!

My injectors all appeared to be tight enough.

Symptoms this morning - temperature was below 45 degrees. I drove 8 miles to work with it purring like a kitten.

At 9:30 I went out to drive 4 miles to the dealer. It knocked like a 62 Ford PU low on oil. The knock is VERY pronounced below 1500 rpm.

Taking off from stand still, it rattles like a 1981 V8 with BAD pre-ignition.

Putting down the street at 35 mph knock is there. It more or less disappears above 45 mph. Barely noticeable.

At 65 mh on the freeway - not noticeable at all.

I just carried it back to the dealer's service department and had a set down with the Service Manager and Assistant Manager. After my conversation, I took the service manager for a drive. He said it was much worse than he thought.

He had more or less kept the Assistant Mgr from doing anything because there wasn't any information in Star Tech. I told them I didn't care if it was Star Tech, Star Trek, or Star Search, the truck would be diagnosed and fixed - they have diagnostic equipment and they need to use it!

Service manager was going to sit with the technician as they go through all tests.

The truck hasn't set any codes according to the Ass. Svc. Mgr. I don't care - it has a serious problem and it will be fixed! Hopefully today.

Most of the time they are a very good service department. I think they are stumped by a first time problem and want more assistance from DC.

I guess the best solution for you guys with this problem is to tell your dealer to install a new injector or injectors and see if it goes away. Right?

Nick

They can take their diagnostic computer and turn off each injector individually. This should be easy to diagnose on mine. The knock is quite steady.

I am anxious to find out if they can actually fix mine today.

My engine has various "knocks" and ticks that sometimes come and go. Could be just variations in fuel quality (although I fill up at the same station every time). I don't know. I monitor threads like this very carefully just to see if something really major comes up. I have never addressed any of the noises with the dealer.

Over 11,000 miles on mine and no knocking or vibration.

It isn't as quiet as it was new. There is more clatter on takeoff and the exhaust has gotten a bit louder. It still isn't loud by any means. I like the sound.

Sometimes I have to chuckle to myself when I read some of the posts. Just two years ago if you purchased a second gen it sounded like the pistons or rods were going to come out of the block. It was to many a sweet sound. Now they make the engine quiet (mind you it is the same basic indestructible engine) and people complain about a little knocking. Well rod knocks do not come and go, but combustion knocks do.

What is amazing is that some people think the engine/truck is bad because it makes "diesel" noises. Well my 03 knocked sometimes during the 40,000+ miles I drove it, and my 04 has 9,000 miles and it also does the same thing. OK, maybe it should be perfectly quiet all the time, but I just drive the wheels off mine, and enjoy it. I know it will never break. Just do a poll of how many 3rd gen's have had a catastrophic engine failure. I bet it is fewer than five if that many, and none were oil related or hard part breakage.

Amen, brother! :)

it seem kinda funny when they make a statement "it didnt set any codes so we cant fix it" arent there any mechanics any more or they all just parts changers.

If you had the KNOCK that mine has, you would want it fixed.

Fuel milage and power seem to be down also.

I had a 2001 and a 2002 and I did not mind the diesel noise. Ride on my Ford 3000 diesel tractor for a few hours and you could understand.

They told me yesterday evening it is a bad injector. The 5* dealer doesn't stock replacement injectors but will have one this morning via UPS.

I bought the 2004 for the LWB and larger cab. My stock 2002 pulled just as good as the 2004 305HP.

Diesels are like camels,They spit, smell, make funny noises,But they are extremely loyal with great endurance. If you don"t want these inherit qualities don"t buy one. flame away.

This is not in regard to anyone just a thought

i very much agree. if it's got oil pressure, and good water temp, and it not smoking, a little fuel knock isn't going to hurt. it can be the electronics controlling the injectors that are causing the problems. it might glitgh and advance the timing too much, or there might be some extra resistance in the wire going to the injector that could be causing it.

you should hear the GE locomotive diesel engines at idle and low load, they sound terrable, and they viberate and resonate at full load, but they are 100x more reliable them the EMD diesel
