OK, this was brought up on another board... Is DC bringing back the CAD in the 06/07 trucks?? Any rumors other than this one??

I looked at a single 06, and it was still a non-CAD axle... but I haven't taken the time to actually look at any others...

My guess would be to get rid of the potential for the vibrations that plague some of the 03/04 truck, as it really doesn't affect mileage significantly.

Anyone heard anything like this??

Yep, a CAD was on the front axles until mid 02 production, then they dropped it for a straight axle. The CAD is a front axle that is split on the passenger side. A collar engages splines to lock the two halves together when 4x4 is engaged. When disengaged, the pass side wheel/axle spins free from the diff. The diff thinks the pass side wheel is in the air and therefore doesn't transmit anything to the ring/pinion. The result is that only the side gears turn - the front driveshaft doesn't spin except when in 4x4.

The best thing about it is that you can override the CAD and create a 2WD Lo range - TC in low but the CAD disengaged - great for backing up heavy trailers.

The CAD is reliable for the most part. The main failure is the vacuum motor to drive the engagement. There is a cable replacement for when that happens. I speculate that it was going to be dropped on the AAM axles, and when DC ran out of CAD-equipped Dana 60s for the 2002 year they told Dana to just ship straight axles.
