When I changed my fuel filter the last time, I was never able to get the pump/lift pump, (I don't know which one it is) to come on like it normaly does when you go to start the truck. I cranked and cranked, but it never came on. After about the 5th crank, the truck started like I never changed the filter.

Is this proof that the lift pump is dead?

Mark,
I have the same year as you. My pump will run a burst when I just turn on the key without hitting the starter. After it quits running, it will run again only longer if I bump the starter, but don't crank it.
Loosen the bleeder valve closest to you thats on top of the filter housing and turn the key on. If it don't squirt fuel its not working.

WyoJim-
When you say the bleeder valve closest to me, you mean the one on the far right of the fuel filter if you were looking at the truck head on right?

Mark, the inlet test port on the '98. 5/'99 24v fuel filter housing is more toward the rear than the outlet test port (assuming you are standing in front of the PDC).

azcummins, If you can not hear your lift pump running then I would say it is electrical. Check the connection on the pump, then check the power distrabution box under the hood. do not remember without looking but I think there is a relay in there for the lift pump, look under the cover it will show. Pull that relay and take one from another place and put in the pump relay spot and see if it works. I do not remember but I do not think there is one in the fuse box in the cab but it wouldn't hurt to check. Hope this helps.
