the reason for this question is as follows. approx 4 months ago i had a new clutch installed. shortly after i noticed a small amount of oil sweat around the pinion area where the rear driveshaft connects to the rear differential. there are no drops but the sweat stain is growing. if the rear driveshaft was not installed correctly would this cause this problem. truck has approx 115000 miles on it and the rear differential is filled with 80-140 syn lube. thanks.

As far as I know you can't put this driveline together wrong (there is a fat spline that will go only one way). Did they take it apart at the slip yoke? If it was not taken apart there is not way it could have been put on wrong. Your seal is probably just getting tired. I know mine was leaking when I got my truck with only 67k on it. I changed it and now have over 173k and no leak.

Of course I just asumed you had a two piece shaft (no truck in signature). If it is a one piece shaft then there is no way it could be put on wrong.

thanks for the info. i have been told the driveshaft could be installed wrong/backwards meaning 180 deg out. as far as i know it was removed as one unit with the carrier bearing. i will fill out the truck signature when i figure out how to. thanks again

At the top of the page, put the mouse pointer on "Discussion forums" and then click on "user control panel" to get to your signature and profile pages.

synthetics need additives to keep the seals soft and "swollen" so they won't leak. Dino lubes have such stuff in them naturally. Thus, it is more common to have syn lubes leaking past the seals.
