Boys, getting to be time to move up past 400hp and if I could be assured that there is a clutch that is a least as friendly as the stock one in my 2002 HO I would do it. I am concerned about all the chatter on "chatter" I have heard and the what happens when the left quadricep becomes larger than the right one from pushing the pedal. Anybody real happy out there? Thanks in advance, George

I just installed Mitchell double disk clutch, now before you start rollin' your eyes, from what you may have heard through the grapvine, this clutch is very nice.

Everyone knows that this clutch will hold all the power you could have, so I won't comment anymore on that. However, this is my daily driver, and tow vehical, all I can say is, I have no problems towing with it, I love it. You'll have to drive one to see for yourself. Call Doug @ 1-740-246-6329, tell them what your looking for, they'll hook you up.

Thanks Rob. As long as it is not made in Red China I won't be rolling my eyes. How about pedal pressure and chatter? George

Hey Big Bob. I was in Post Falls 2 days ago with my new Kelderman and Gear Vendor on coming from Montana to the Left coast of WA state and stopped to visit a ministry I help raise funds for there. Great area. Are you a South Bend owner and can you tell me about pedal pressure and chatter over stock? Thanks, Little George ;)

George,

The pedal pressure on mine was not much, if any different than stock, real easy. I start in 2nd all the time, 315 tires, 3. 55 gears, and a 7500# truck, and no chatter to speak of. I'm not sure where your located, but I'm headin' down to Kentucky this weekend for Black Mountain Diesel's dyno day, if your in the neighborhood, swing by and take it for a rip.

Later, Rob

EDIT, you posted first, I now see your nowheres near Kentucky, ya up for a road trip?;)

Southbend gets my vote!!! Peter explained how the chatter is caused, and how he went about finding a fix for it.

Andrew

P. S. Please do not think I am implying that any other clutch has chatter, just how Peter designed HIS fix for it.

Southbend CON OFE is the clutch you're after. The pedal pressure is lighter than stock, no chatter, drives smooth as stock and it will hold all yer power.

If your going South Bend and wanting more and more horsepower by the minute (like the rest of TDR's membership),

I would go ahead and get the CON FE 13"/1. 25" conversion unit.

Call Peter at Southbend. Explain to him what you want and he will take care of you. Just replaced my Con FE with a somewhat experimental Southbend clutch this weekend. Extremely smooth and pedal is very easy. Not broke in yet so it slips a little. I'm right at 400 hp. If this clutch holds it will be the BOMB baby Oo. I will keep you guys posted on the results.

Well, lots of experiences here! Love to hear more and greatly appreciate your time. Right now the EZ and 295's and long legs of the Gear Vendor are probably loading the stock some but more power would stretch it too much and I just need to know that there is a "fer sure" way to deal with more power and clutch slipping while still maintaining perfect "driveability". HMMM wonder where you got that????

I was amazed that my South Bend Con O was easier to drive than stock. At 400 plus HP I am starting to get a little slip when towing my travel trailer but these clutches are hard to believe they work so good.

Hey Rob,why would people roll their eyes at that clutch. What have people been saying about them. Just curious. :)

Well, first off because it's a "pulling" clutch, people freakout and think it's not streetable, which it is very streetable.

Secondly, "people" think double disk, and again freakout because it will chatter you to death, which it won't.

Third, it's not cheap, but it doesn't slip either.

I knew the SB pom pon gals would be out in full force, I just thought I'd give another option that works, and works well.

BTW, I was checkin' some other sites, and I see that the "other" clutches are creepin' up the same price range as the Mitchell clutch, so maybe it's not so pricey after all.

Rob-can't make Black Mountain dyno days without my wife finding out what a looney I really am (lot of work keeping up the rational husband image) but if you are going to dyno I would love to see a report on this string. Your Mitchell clutch is new to you, right? How long has it been in and what did it replace? I am guessing that the double disk setup is the meanest of the options. Great to hear it is "streetable" as well. George

George,

Yes it is new to me, goin' on 3-4 weeks now, not alot of time, but enough to know. I replaced a TST clutch with it, the TST did it's job, and at $250 I couldn't ask for more out of it, it was great, except it didn't appreciate the 45,000#+ sled hooked up to it.

BTW, did I mention 3rd gear launch/burnouts, real sweet, but rough on the tires.

"Meanest of the options"... ... . well it does boast a 2800# torque rating, thats kinda mean.

Good Luck on whatever you choose, Rob
