The New Patch

I need some suggestions from those that do this type of work. I'm in the process of re-staining my deck and have come to the lattice work (sp) . I have about 10 4'x8' pieces that need to be redone, going from solid grey to solid white. I'm sticking with a solid oil based stain ( Moorwood) and thought about using a spray gun, of some conifuration, to simplify the task. I checked with a local rental shop and I can rent a pro model for $100. 00 per day. For that money, I'd rather own the tool and not be in a rush. While I realize that I can't purchase a quality professional sprayer for $100. 00, I could get a air powered spray gun for about the same money. I already have a compressor in the house. I've also thought about the Wagner electric sprayers, just not sure which route to take. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. TIA !!!

You're not going to go into the paint contracting business or paint your truck with a Wagner electric sprayer but I've been very pleased with mine. Don't really want to use it for small jobs as cleanup requires more time than just breaking out a brush especially with oil based paint. My biggest complaint is that the vibration numbs my hands.

Thats a hard one to answer. I don't like the wagner painters but some people may have a use for them. You can buy a less expensive "airless" sprayer from Home Depot etc. but it is still going to cost you $300-400.

The compressor sprayer (cup gun) is not going to spray a heavy product very well, if at all.

The Rental is the best bet, $100 per day seems high to me, about $65 per day is more normal.

Of course you could do what some of the local contractors around here do, go buy a sprayer from HD, use it, then take it back for a refund:mad: Makes it hard to be competitive and they call themselves "contractors" I say as a homeowner ask to "see" the contractors tools BEFORE you hire them, also references etc...

Thanks Guys. My biggest concern is the weight of the stain I'm using. It's very thick, similar to any oil based paint I've used. Guessing that the cup gun type of sprayers I've seen, such as the type you would find in a body shop, are meant for thinner weight material ??? Thanks again.

What you do not want is an air sprayer. You would have to really thin the stains. Also the transfer efficiency of an air sprayer is at best 30%. Even a Wagner is up around 90%. A reasaonable airless (say a 1/2 horse) will run you around $450. The nice thing about those is you can just about spray as fast as you can mix.

I have many airless and HVLP systems but on railings and small decks I like to use a HVLP conversion gun. I am running a binks gun with a two quart binks paint pot and 5 foot whip. You can find the hvlps in the pawn shops cheap. Make sure you get a conversion one so it will run off the compressed air. I think harbour freight has a cheap gun and pot for about $65
