gear in an open flatbed with stake sides dry????? I mean do you need to have a special tarp made or what???? Is there a special way to fold it etc?????

I use shipping pallets on the floor and then stack my gear on them. Then I just strap the tarp so that everything is covered and the rain runs off the sides and underneath the gear.

I would, and have, mantee it up like I was going to load it on a mule. In a nutshell put the load in the center diagonal, fold bottom up, fold right side over, fold left side over with excess folded under, fold top down with excess folded under, and tie up tight with a mantee rope. stand on end such that the rain will drain from the top down... ... . voile! (excuse the french :-laf )

I usually just tuck the extra back under the tarp until it's snug. Then use a smaller strap (or two) around the bottom to tighten it up.
