Is there an "ideal" running board out there ?:

1. step that is away from the body, so your foot doesn't hit the body, and is supported by more than a toe, and you don't have to step on "sidesaddle". But integrated into smooth lines.

2. protects the body.

3. clean, smooth, lines.

4. available in black or metallic

Rob, you will be THERE before you know it. So be ready. :D :D

As an OLD freind of my useta say ( God rest his soul), "Rob, I may grow old, but I'll never grow up", the words I live by. I'm a 33 year old teenager, without the goofy music. :D

Running Boards

I am using Delta III Challenger made in Sturgis, Mi. I have had them 6 yrs. they are polished alum. they are heavy ga. I am using two piece one for bed and one for cab as the bed will flex. They came with a splash guard on each end. They mount to the body and the frame with 1x1 angle.

95 2x4 5 speed:)

I have ones by DeeZee that sound just like A Wallace's.

Diamond plate aluminum, with a splash guard. Also got the splash guards for the back, and bed rail protectors (all in the diamond plate aluminum). Must say, on this black truck, it really looks nice AND plenty of room for your feet!

We had a set on our 98. 5 3500 at work that had a nice 4 inch face on them. All aluminum, very sturdy, and pricey. Don't remember the brand, but they were around $1200 if memory serves.

I also have some Dee Zee Diamond Plate Running boards on my Quad Cab. They are really nice. IMO, whatever brand you get make sure that they are custom fit for your vehicle and not a universal fit. Some universal ones may sort of fit. But you may still end up spending a lot of time modifying them and/or the mounting brackets and still end up with a poor fit.

Iv'e had Dee Zee Running Boards on 4 different vehicles and they all fit. Klaus

Geno's

Geno's Garage has the Sidewinder step that comes down when you open the door and retracts when you close it. That's what I'm gonna get when the old lady frees up the wallet.

I have a set of black Dee Zee XF????. They are really good. You can get your whole foot on the board and not worry about slipping off.

You can get black ones from dodge. They are the easiest running boards I've ever put on. I had them on my 95 and now have a set on my 02. Jeff

IMHO, the best are the ones YOU like and are cheap. If you are close to me in Sacramento CA, I have a set of polished aluminum running boards for a long bed. They are the Dodge boards and I need them out of my shop. R E A L cheap.

Steve.

Same as Jeff Knight for me. I have the Dodge boards and like them. Easy to install, smooth lines and can hold the weight.

Warn 4X Boards. You can get your whole foot on them, they have a rubber non-slip top, attach to the frame, and are removable.

Decision made

I have been hunting for a well made board for my 03 black Sport dually. Mainly to protect from stone chips. Not many vendors have them engineered for the new dually yet. I was hoping to find a black board that was custom fit and protected the bottom of the truck from the stone chips that have already started to show up. When I could not find black, someone on this list suggested highly polished stainless steel. That led to Putco or J&J Enterprises. J&J was first out of the gate with a custom installation for my truck. I like their bracket set up. Very similar to the Mopar dually boards of diamond plate aluminum. (My wife hates diamond plate) I ordered the Classic Tube Tapered boards for my truck along with the matching mudflaps. Pricey but I think they will look good, they are strong and will last the life of the truck. Will post the pictures when I get them on.

Has anyone tried the really heavy duty nerf bars usually called rock sliders? They are intended to protect the rocker panels from damage when rock crawling by hardcore offroaders. I realize a 7500 lb long bed pickup truck is not the ideal vehicle for this sort of activity, but in keeping with the general spirit of over-engineering (BOMBing) prevalent on this board, it seems reasonable to ask.

Although I cannot find it now; on an earlier internet search, I found a pic of a full sized K-5 Blazer with all four wheels at least a foot off the ground, suspended only by two Highlift jacks on the rocksliders. Pretty cool, and definitely strong enough to protect the rocker panels and act as a step to get into the truck (well, for most of us anyway ;) )

Anyway, here is a link to a site by a guy who made a set for his Toyota Tacoma: http://users.sisna.com/benmaster/tacoma/featuresmods/rocksliders.html

Any takers?

I'm with B KIRK!

I have the Warn 4x Boards (98. 5" long version for the LWB QC) and couldn't be happier!

I previously had Smittybilt nerf bars...

took 'em back before I even had the passenger side mounted! (extremely wimpy mounting system employed back in '98).

After that, I decided to try the Mopar black anodized aluminum nerf bar/steps (looked great, very solid but interferred with larger tires... i. e. , the front radius of the nerf bar and short "leg" extends forward into the wheelwell opening ( )... ... oh well, see ya!

Then FINALLY! YES! The Warn 4x Boards provided everything I was looking for in a nerf bar plus! Good looks, they harmonize better than nerf bars by tying the cab and the box of the truck together better, they look more engineered in, instead of bolt-on, the rubber step surface is wider and really is rubber, not plastic like most of the nerf bar steps utilize. Is that feature important? If you live where it freezes or has frost, you'll know those plastic steps aren't worth ****! In addition, the step is placed at a height that is light years ahead of ANY nerf bar... and the 4x Boards can be QUICKLY and EASLIY removed for off-road excursions.

But hey, it's your money...

have fun! :D

The King of Running Boards

Fellow Rammers:

Brown's Welding, from New Braunfels TX, makes the "king" of running boards. They are heavy 2" tubular steel covered with black diamond plate and extend fender to fender. I don't have them only because I'm managing weight and these things are heavy. I have their grill/brush guard (heavy), their rear bumper ( heavy too) and their headache rack (cool)

Guys: there just isn't anything as cool as a CTD Dodge dressed out by Brown's.

FYI: Ranchhand is similar.
