have a 06 truck with second gear an looking at a wrecked donor truck thats an 05 is there any diference to be aware of?

Yes, the '06 was revised in small ways to tolerate full time use of an exhaust brake. Among other things, a reverse thrust washer that is under stress when an exhaust brake is used was revised and improved. There may be additional changes.

The '06 model was the first Ram built that could be ordered from the factory with a Jacobs exhaust brake fully integrated with the ECM and PCM to control and fully utilize the exhaust brake.

Also, I don't know if the differences were internal to the transmission or created by ECM - PCM programming but the '06 and '07 offered multiple modes of operation - overdrive - tow haul - overdrive locked out all controlled by the button in the end of the shifter. The '05 offered only two modes but I've forgotten which two they were.

Most '05s have the thrust washer and were mechanically exhaust brake capable... Dodge pulled the plug on the software upgrade they promised to us '05 owners. Poor ol' Carlton Bale was a frequent contributor here, and got hung out to dry. The '05 tow/haul button strictly turned tow/haul on and off. For '06 they made the button dual function, so you could also lock out overdrive

If you want to know the facts you should find and read the long running thread hosted by Cummins/Jacobs brake engineer Calton Bales. He kept the membership informed of developments periodically from 2003 - 2006.

This is my understanding as well. If I "lost" my 04. 5, I would buy a used 06 or 07 with the 5. 9. I love my annual oil changes and don't want to do the CJ oil thing or DPF stranded in the woods thing waiting for a regen.
