Just rotated my tires at 30k, I noticed a very slight give in the front tires (top to bottom). With weight on the wheels there is no noticable play (with vigorous shaking) and there are no strange noises when driving and/or turning the wheel.

Is this play up and down or in and out??

Up and down is "normal" for the 3rd gens... mine have done that since new... but I have one starting to show some signs that the bottom joint is failing, getting some lateral movement...

Do they cover this under the drive train warranty or 36K?

Under the 3/36 for sure, but they might still cover it under the 7/70... I'm out of warranty and wouldn't have taken it to the dealer even if I still had warranty.

DC has "tolerances" that they compare your movement with to determine if it is acceptable or not. So they may say there is no problem even if there is appreciable movement in the joints...
