Is this a problem?

I notice when I was looking to buy a receiver and ball that they sell locking mechanisms for the receiver so it does not get stolen. Is this a big problem? Would a some coat hanger wire wrapped around several times be a deterrent? I figure if it is going to take some work to seal it that most thief's would walk on by. If not what is the best type to buy?

Every reciever and ball set up I have gets locked on. If you drill out the hole alittle bit bigger where the slide catch goes through the pin you can put a small master lock through the hole. They also make rubber boots to keep the crap out of the key hole in the lock.

I don't keep mine installed. When we get to a race and the trailer get unhooked, the hitch gets locked up in the truck. A friend of mine didn't do that and some slime ball took it. He had to buy a new one (of course it wasn't the right drop but close enough) to get his trailer home.



If you keep it installed, use a lock or it will disappear at the worst time. Be sure and pack the key hole with grease before installing the lock cover and check it a couple times a year to make sure it isn't corroded.

I always use a locking pin as it is easier to get on and off than those damn pins when they get rusty. I actually have a warn shackle mount in the receiver during a time where we had a lot of snow and was towing alot of people. Well the bar was in with a locking pin but someone stole the damn shackle



I leave the locking pin in the empty receiver all the time as it is an easy way to hook up a tow strap.

I installed mine with a locking pin the first week I had the truck. It has not been off the truck since. I use Uniball and just leave the shank on and the balls under the back seat. It gives the rice burners something to look at while they tailgate.

It also makes a great battering ram and when it is icy and you have a tailgater that can not stop it sure does a number on the deserver. Keep it lockes so you know it will be there when you need it. JMO

Aside from gettin' stolen, I was at the lake a couple of years ago with my boat, and some bozo decided to remove the pin from my hitch. It's a good thing I ALWAYS look over the rig, before I start movin', a 5,000# boat/trailer would have made quite a mess in the road. I bought a locking pin, and ALWAYS use it now, it keeps my billet aluminum Ram head cover from walkin' away, when I'm not towin' a trailer.

I always use a lock on my hitch - I use the locking pin type -not too spendy and it prevents the scumbags who like to steal stuff. .
