All right guys just picked up the 05 3500 4X4 Laramie with elec shift on the fly. Is this thing all wheel drive? with the transfer case in 2WD the drive shaft spins but all the synptoms of the truck are it is not in 4HI no transfer case bind up when turning ETC I just brought it home on 10/30/04and drove it 350 miles the first day. I noticed it at the dealer with 15 miles on it.

No it is not AWD. The reason the front driveshaft spins is there is no vacuum disconnect on the axle AND the hubs are always locked in. The reason there are no symptoms of being in 4 high is that inside the transfer case the front output shaft free spins until you put it into 4 high (or 4 low).

Super

Man thanks for the reply. I am an old school kinda guy when it comes to four by's I love the old manual shift on the floor and the manual locking hubs. I traded in my 99 3500 4X4 DRW I drove all the way to Fresno to pick this thing up when another guy decided he was'nt going to take it I live in So Ca. This thing is a fully loaded 3500 4X4 laramie DRW 6 spd with 4:10's. Are the 03 and newer manual shift on the fly the same way? that is what I had ordered. I know that the 99"s drive shaft would spin freely when in 2HI, I guess that was due to as you stated the vacum actuated hubs. Also one more thing will this give me lower fuel econmy?, wear and tear ETC?.

This is one remarkable truck. :-laf

You won't see much difference in economy due to that. As for wear and tear that shouldn;t be any more than before as there's no power going through the axle... so there's no more leverage on anything. I believe the main difference since there's no vacuum disconnect is that the ring and pinion in the front end are always turing as a result.

And the 3rd gen ( 2003+ ) are shift on the fly with the manual t-case shifter... meaning you can shift into 4 high while travleing at speeds up to 50 MPH.

Hey Super

On the manual shift on the fly 03+ models do they have the same non vacum actuated hubs as the elec shift on the fly T cases?. And will the drive shaft be spinning all the time as mine does?.

Thans for all the helpful info. :)

05 3500 4X4 Laramie DRW 6 spd 4:10's elec shift on the fly T case.

Out to pasture 99 3500 4X4 DRW auto 4:10's and Man shift on the fly T case.

Don't mean to butt in, but the answer is Yes. All '03 and up 4wd systems are identical with the exception of the switch and electronics on the "dial a drive" unit. I have the manual lever because I figured with the 6 spd that if I have one lever sticking out, I might as well have two. I might have considered the "dial a drive" if I had an auto to free up the floor space, but I'm happy with what I got.

could a fella install a Warn type axle disconnect so from differintal does not always spin Like my older 4x4 trucks had

Last I checked, nobody makes a direct bolt on for our trucks. If you try a search there was talk about trying to get enough people together to justify some sort of group buy pilot project, but I can't remember the company. I don't think it went anywhere.

I wonder if the new Power Wagon will have a different set-up? Might be worth checking out.

Just curious why you'd want to disconnect it? It will only give you a very small mileage increase if any and the only parts that are subjected to any extra wear and tear are the ring and pinion... but since there's no load on them all they do is spin.

I could see putting a manual hub on if you offroad a lot and needed a 2 low setting... .
