My general machanic is a big Ford fan (and a good buddy to go to the range with ... he is a crack shot), anyway ... he was telling me about his friend who has a new '04 F550 with the 6. 0L/5sp auto trany, and said that he is getting 25 mpg and 22 mpg pulling a 10K+ equipment trailer.

I said that he is crazy ... there is no way that truck is getting that milage ... especially pulling a trailer of that weight. But he was dead serious, and that he can light up the duelly's from a standing start.

Could this possibly be true ... 25 mpg empty 22 mpg pulling a trailer? I thought the F550 had something like 4. 87 rear-ends ... that would kill fuel milage.

If that is so, I may have to rethink my next truck purchase.

Nope. He gets about 11-12mpg running empty and 7-8mpg with 10,000 lbs behind. That 4. 88 ratio is used to make up for lack of motor and transmission. It eats up mpg in a hurry. But since he insists he's telling the truth, you can simply reply, "that's not bad at all. I'm only getting 26mpg empty and 24mpg towing 10,000 lbs. But your truck is much heavier than mine. "

I had a F550 for about a year. 01 with 7. 3/auto/4. 88 gears. Trailer weighs 18,000. Truck topped out at around 65 mph and got 5-6 mpg pulling that trailer. Big mistake buying that truck. Replaced it with a FL60.
