Under my dash and next to my parking brake is a strange plug and a bird nest of wires. I bought the truck used a couple of years ago so it wasn't installed by me.

Was this plug for some sort of programmer or tuner or chip? Should I remove it? I thought maybe if it is for a tuner I could look into one for my truck to help with power and MPG a bit. I don't know anything about tuners so I'm unsure what benefits I'd see from one. I'm in CA and likely not allowed to use one, but I wonder if I could take it off every two years when I had to take it in to get the smog inspection.

That looks more like an aftermarket alarm. The starter interupt portion would have been respliced when the box was removed

yeah I dont think its a brake controller plug.. I agree with Bob, thinking it was some sort of aftermarket alarm and/or remote start system.

A brake controller only uses 4 wires so at least two of those plugs are for something else. You should be able to trace any potential brake controller wires up to a light blue factory connector.

Thanks guys for the input. I have a brake controller already installed to the right and under the steering wheel. Near my right knee. Based on where this truck use to live I'm betting it was an alarm. I don't like the idea of all those weird plugs and splices there so I may pay to have them removed and redone.

I'm with you on this, I hate the electrical butchering that some folks perform on innocent equipment, especially when you have to figure out what it was they were trying to accomplish...

I have spent countless hours, cleaning up controls on HVAC units, that some imbecile had violated because he had no knowledge/idea of the designed/engineered system operation. Clean it up B1961, you will be glad you did down the road. Jess

It has to be some form of alarm, or remote start that was removed. Do yourself a favor and remove all traces of the non original wiring. Almost guarentees problems in the future that will make you chase your tail like a caged dog.
