Is this normal or something I should be concerned about?

I posted this in the 6. 7 engine/trans forum but after 120 reviews I got no responses. Thought this group was a little more informative so I'm posting here too.

I pulled into the Costco parking lot last night and could smell something funny. I couldn't swear it was from my truck so I sniffed around under the hood, in the wheel wells etc. and didn't find anything suspicious.

Tonight driving home (at a stop light) I thought I smelled it again but it was no where near as strong so I kissed it off. When I got home, I opened the hood and thought I could smell "that smell" ever so lightly and saw this oil mark on the turbo. Is this normal?

What does it smell like? My 2011 smells funny sometimes but I can't exactley describe the smell to you, almost a burning smell but not really. I just assumed it is the exhaust after being in regen. Its not a very strong smell, just something I catch a little whiff of from time to time. Not sure about the oil spot, doesn't look like a lot.

Well I want to say burning something (I thought it was regen also). I want to say it smells like hot tires or something. I'm wondering if it oil from the turbo?

My 2010 6. 7 L has a smell at times also. It smells similar to a cigerette light smell. I think it is from the regen process.

No way to say for sure but I think what all of you reported is the same thing I smell from time to time. I think it results from the engine being in the regen mode at the time you stop or perhaps shortly before. I smell it on rare occasions if a gentle wind or no wind causes the cab air intake to pick up some exhaust.

Almost certainly nothing to worry about. Relax, enjoy your new trucks.

This sounds like what I posted earlier in the year. Everyone that smells that smell(hot, lighter fluid ) all have it when we are stopped. Regen. Nothing to be done, like Harvey says enjoy the truck.

Can I resubmit my question to the oil I see on the Turbo? Is that normal? Is anybody else seeing that on their turbos?

Thanks,

Craig

Why don't you wipe it clean with a little brake cleaner or carb cleaner on a soft rag then watch to see if it returns? My guess is it won't.

It might simply be a bit of oil that was on the turbo when installed during engine assembly or a drop off the end of your dipstick when someone checked the oil.

The smudge I saw in the photos you posted looked like about 1/2 a drop.

Should not be any oil there so like Harvey said, spray it clean and see if it returns. If it were mine I would not give it a second thought.

As far as the smell, if it only occurs when you stop, and smells like charcoal lighter fluid burning it is the regen process being interupted when you come to a stop. Again, nothing to worry about. If it bugs you, place the A/C in recirc mode and the problem will be solved.
