I was towing a bobcat on my trailer (about 12k lbs) on flat land then had to go up 7% grade for 10 miles an the truck slowed down from 70 to about 50mph egt 1150-1250 an engin temp at 210. Is that normal?

Is what normal.

Higher egt's and water temp, Yes it's normal.

When pulling hills and towing my truck runs from 210-220 water temp.

Keep the egt's at a save level, 1250 was fine. How was your transmission temp?

Sure sounds normal. What gearing does truck have? That much weight and inclines on a regular basis would in my mind call for 4. 10s.

is this normal

i dont have a transmission temp gauge except the stock one. an yes i turned the od off so i assume i was in 3rd gear. 3. 73 rear end. i had a lot more pedal left but when i would step on it more everything kept gettin hotter! what do i need to do to keep it all cooler?

Probably not a lot. Thats a real workout. Bet theres not much carbon on those pison tops. Then again its designed for such work also.

You can't do much to keep the motor temps cooler, BTW most everyone I have talked to does see 210+ when pulling hard.

As far as EGT's you are still safe, you could add a Smarty or Smarty Jr. but keep it on lower power levels to keep from killing your transmission.

The timing that the Smarty adds may get you some speed with less EGT's.

I know I can pull most hills out there at 65+ and not break 1,200egt's when towing 8,000lbs+. But I also have a 6speed, not sure how much that makes a difference or not.

Put a transmission temp gauge on to see how that is doing to.

Is this with the 2005 truck? If so, you are actually still way below its safe maximum for egts. As far as I know it can run 1450 pre turbo for extended time periods. I have run my '06 into the wind for several hours at 30 psi boost and 1000 degrees post turbo egts with no ill effects while towing a substantially bigger load than yours. I have grossed at 25k lbs and pulled the I-70 passes, the tunnel and vail foot to the floor 65-70 mph with no problems.

I personally would have run the speed limit up the hill just for fun:)

Nah, they are pretty tough to kill:-laf I had my '03 dually grossed at 30k lbs and crossed Monarch pass up here on hwy 50, foot to the floor. That was the day after it crossed all of SD foot to the floor for 10 hrs, all it could muster was 70 mph with that load on. Never missed a beat. I've run them pretty hard, as has a lot of other guys here. Yours was doing great! If you think it sounded like it was going to blow up, try a duramax under heavy load at high rpm:eek:

I have yet to see anything from cummins saying we can sustain those temps... In fact what they told me was that 1350* is what the cylinder temps should be at max power... 1450* is a lot hotter... . On the same token we don't see a lot of stock motors being melted, but I really dont like it... hence a smarty Jr, dropped the EGT's a lot, and now I feel safer while towing...

1400*+ is really easy to obtain while towing with a 04. 5-07 5. 9, and there are a LOT of people towing heavy loads with no mods/gauges... so it probably is a case of TMI, but oh well... now I dont break 1200*
