Well, just got the official notice (by mail) that the ISB engine fuel lift pump is now being recalled to an entirely different pump. As opposed to reinstalling the exact same thing. I'd like to think that I'm the first to be notified, however the mail here is r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w so I'm sure some of you know about this already.

BTW all my ISB's are in school buses. Could it be a school bus only thing? It lists the reasons for the recall, same problem as the ISB in the 98. 5 to ??? Dodge Ram.

The contact number is 1-800-343-7357

It goes on to say that they "regret any inconvenience"... ... "they have initiated this recall due to a sense of responsiblity they have for it's products"... ..... "the interest of safety" ... ... ... "your continued satisfaction with our products" etc. etc.

Too bad that I have already replaced the fuel lift pumps many times as well as some injection pumps :(

That *IS* interesting - let's hear more about this as it develops - I haven't heard a word...

Wonder what sort of "magic bullet" they have come up with, and exactly who benefits?

About $500 too late for me, but without doubt a step in the right direction! Perhaps they really do monitor the TDR... . :-laf

FOLLOWUP:

The phone # posted in the lead post is a CUMMINS assistance #, and they have NO info on a pump recall as it affects Dodge owners, and gave the Dodge # to be called:

1-800-992-1997

THAT number got me (eventually) to a gentleman who looked up my particular '02, and came up with NO LP recall that applies to me and my truck.

He DID state that the recall notice ID # on the above would help him establish exacly which recall and associated vehicles are affected, IF that recall WAS initiated by DC.

Since the original post listed a number that went direct to Cummins, I suspect this is NOT a *Dodge* recall, but rather one that applies to busses and similar vehicles using the ISB - but it still is of interest, if it IS an upgrade worthy installing for those willing to pay for it as opposed to other aftermarket alternatives.

The recall notice came from

Bryan Rathert

Executive Director of Service

Cummins Inc.

Columbus IN

There is no "Campaign" number or recall number :(

It mentioned that the recall notice is being send in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act

I get a new lift pump of a new design and a fuel pressure sensor that will work with the vehicles electrical systen to illuminate the engine warning lamp(s)

It (the recall) decribes the condition as a loss of engine power which could result in a crash.

YUP - sounds like a recall applying only to Cummin's commercial/industrial applications - hopefully (don't hold your breath!) DC will step up and duplicate the recall, but not yet it appears... :(

ANYWAY, if possible supply us with photos if possible, part # and anything that might be helpful to us Dodge owners who might wanna make the upgrade on our own dime...

"It mentioned that the recall notice is being send in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act "

HMMmm - now why would commercial users be entitled to any more "safety" than the rest of us ordinary mortals?

Maybe some coordinated campaign direct to DC would motivate then to do the same for us?

It's not even commercial/industrial... It's limited to emergency vehicles and school buses ONLY. I have the full TSB in my toolbox at work, I'll bring it home tomorrow and try to scan it, we were REQUIRED to read it, had to clock in on a seperate work order and all, it was issued as a safety notice...

It's for school buses only, so I found out. Have to take my buses, all NINE ISB Bluebirds to Columbus Ohio for the retro :{

Apparently, it's more important for the safety of the children as opposed to the general public who would drive a measly old pick-up truck

Now, what if the operator of a (W)3500 trailering a 35 footer gooseneck loaded down with a John Deere 6030 crashed into a school bus????

I brought the TSB home, so any questions, post and I'll try to answer...

The recall says that it is to correct a possible stalling condition, and it also calls for VP44 replacement on SOME vehicles, whether they are throwing a code or not I believe.

I got to work this morning, there were already 8 buses in the lot, and 5 in the shop! Did I ever mention I hate working on cab over buses? As of today, I do!

ISB fuel pump recall

I noted the name of the Executive Director of Service for Cummins in Greenleafs post.

Bryan Rathert is his name.

Note my name is Jack Rathert.

Could this be a long lost relative?? Does this mean I will get preferential service for my crappy lift pump even though it is not in a school bus?? Will I just be getting a new truck free???... . not

Oh the posibilities. I can hardly wait to contact him or maybe he will see this post and contact me. Oo. .

It's interesting to note also that all 3rd gen trucks that come in with a bad/failed lift pump are retro-fitted with an in-tank pump just like on the 2005-up trucks.

Clearly, Dodge (and Cummins) has recognized there is a huge problem here, but I fear they're going to let pre-2003 owners "flap in the breeze", so to speak.

I'm curious what the new LP design looks like...

-Ryan

YES, give us some input on what the upgrade is for the busses!!!! I am curious if it's similar to the intank upgrade for the 3rd gens.

That's a nice kick in the nuts. The buses get it, the 3rd gens get it and the others are just passed up... Sounds about right.

I recieved the campaign in my cummins training material at work. Says as follows.

As of the July 1, 2005.

Campaign # C0504

Cummins Inc. is conducting a recall of ISB engines, model year 1998 to model year 2002 (which includes engines mfg. between 1996 and 2003), installed in school buses, transit buses, and emergency vehicles in the US and Canada due to a possible problem with the lift pump. (LOL... ya think) Cummins Inc. has determined that a small percentage of these engines may experience a stall condition.

It also looks like along with the recall, they are installing a pressure switch at the outlet of the fuel filter and running into the 23 pin OEM connector and recalibrating the ECM for the changes so the check engine light will illuminate when pressure drops. (Its about time dont ya say?)

Again, for now this is only on school buses, transit buses and emergency vehicles.

I would assume that it is like this because when Dodge got the ISB from Cummins it was "AS - IS", As in no warranty from Cummins so it would be up to Dodge to step up to the plate to recall the pumps for our trucks. I just want to know what the Cummins upgrade is for the pump, is it only the warning of low pressure or a different pump?

Anybody have connections at the highway safety board? Since Cummins is recalling and we have the same set up it seems Dodge would almost be required to do the same!
