00 quadcb auto 4:10's. Bog off the line, hammer on it it bounces in and out of lockup a few times before 4th gear finally settles in, sounds like a tennis ball got stuffed in the intake once the r's get up there. Left it to warm up the other morning, came back 20 min. later... not running anymore, started a little rough. Hasen't happened since. No mods just straight pipe 113k, no dealers around that can spell diesel. Truck is perfect, just not quite up to par. Mileage sucks but not to extreamly. 13 winter 15 summer

Change the fuel filter. Adjust the valves. Check the fuel pressure. Get back to us.

EDIT: Welcome to the TDR!!!!!!! Hope we can help!

My fuel filter is new 2000 miles ago, and my pressures i don't know about, i've read about lift pumps and maybe thats a place to start... ? Is that my vp44? Don't know much about this fancy s**t.

The VP44 is your injection pump... . Costs about $1350 for the pump. Lift pump is your fuel pump. Costs under $200. Let's hope it's not your VP44... . :D

Send a private message to Briar Hooper and have him send you one of his manual Fuel pressure gauge (cost around $50 I think) It comes with instructions on how to check the FP based on the year truck you tell him you have. I know you said you replaced the fuel filter 2000 miles ago. Was it running bad before you changed it? If not change it again, you might of gotten some bad fuel. Also add your signature to your profile so we know what year truck you have and how it has been modified. You also need to find a good diesel mechanic in your area.

Was only running as bad as it is now before the fuel filter change. When i drained my bowl to clean out any small amount of sediment i put new filter in and buttened it up thinking there was a "lift pump" to fill the bowl and save my prime. To my findings there is no such luck. I filled the bowl and bled the injectors and it fired right up. Is the tolerance for junk in the filter that tight? The old filter was black but not plugged by any means. Does anybody know a good mechanic in central minnesooota?

There is a great group of TDR members in Minn. Look under the chapter news link and hook up with them.

There DEFINATELY is a lift pump to refill the bowl, whether or not it works is another subject. Go out and bump the starter but don't start the engine, you should hear the lift pump run for about 20 seconds. IF you hear it running crack the banjo on the side of the injection pump and make sure you have pressure coming from the lift pump. You NEED to have the pressure checked to make sure the lift pump works, if you don't the injection pump could starve for fuel and be destroyed costing you $2000 or more.

BUY A SERVICE MANUAL. If you cannot get dealer support you had better get one!!!

If you need more help send me an email or a PM and we can work through some of this stuff over the phone on Thursday.

lsmith thanks for your willingness to help! I'm going to go out and test my lift pump for any sign of pumping now.

If my lift pump doesn't work- my engine will still run good and perform regularly? It idles a little rough and makes some odd noises, etc now and then but as far as cruising and 0-60 and with combined gross wt of 19800 at times it goes great.

It will still run fine as there is a suction pump in the injection pump. What you do not get is the EXCESS fuel supplied to cool and lubricate the injection pump, that is what causes the premature death. You will see some power increase from a dead lift pump if you replace it, and higher EGT.

I'm sure i'll have nooo problems finding a lift pump tomorrow morning. -i'm sure a dealers going to have one and be open Christmas day!

Thanks for the explination, it all makes sense now!
