I know someone else has installed one of these. I have a question. The thermocouple comes with a steel colar that the instructions show is to be welded to the exhaust pipe. I want to put the couple pre turbo (as it should be). Has any one tried to weld that collar to the exhaust mamifold and drill the hole afterward? I'm not a welder but I know it is sometimes difficult to weld metal to an exhaust manafold. What's the answer here? Experience is the best teacher.

If you are going pre-turbo you don't use the collar at all. You (or someone yoou trust) simply drills a hole in the exhaust manifold and taps the hole and screws it in. The hole should be about 3/4 inch up from the end of the manifold just a little to left or right of center, as there is a divider in the manifold. If you do it yourself put grease on the drill bit to collect as much metal as possible and when you are finish you should use a good strong mechanics magnet inside the hole to clean out the rest. I would suggest using 2 or 3 drill bits getting progressively larger until you reach the required size of hole. You wouldn't want to ruin the exhause manifold (I think they run about $350 to replace (parts only)). Good luck

I put mine pre turbo and to insure no metal drill filings got into the turbo I disconected the turbo and put a rag in the opening. At this point you can see where to drill and avoid damaging your turbo. I didn't want to take any chances and it worked. I now have 80,000+ miles since instalation.
Good Luck and Happy Trails.

Preleeguy,
My wife bought me the same type of gauge and thermocouple for Christmas. After reading the instructions I sent the thermocouple back for the screw in type. I believe that design was intended for the exaust pipe and not the exhaust manifold as the instructions might suggest. I just couldn't see attempting to weld that little nub to a cast iron exhaust manifold and not resulting in a leak or distorted nub. As the gauge has a colored scale, the ranges were for the probe being at the hotter pre-turbo position.

One more thing to consider. When you insert the probe in the threaded adapter the first time, push it in until it bottoms out against the bottom of the manifold, then pull it back and locate it with the tip in about the center. The hottest part of the exhaust gasses are toward the top, and I discovered my readings are about 50-100 deg hotter here. I just replaced my first probe last week, and it was bottomed out. I put the new one in at "mid stream" and noticed hotter readings. (my first probe was almost 3 yrs old, and I pulled it out to check it's condition and must have broke a wire, each time I removed it, it was fine, my advice, LEAVE IT ALONE & IT WILL LAST FOREVER!)

Thanks for all the insight guys, I've come to several conclusions. 1>That there is probable a screw in adapter available. 2>that the length of the probe can be adjusted, I see the compression collar in there now. I have e-mailed Isspro and they informed me there are several optins available , but it was too involved to go into over the internet. I will call the 800# they gave me to get their help. I know others will be instaling this gage and could use this info. I really like the colored gage face. It's easy to read.
More to come.

OK Here's what Isspro told me. The kit I was sold is for a BIG truck. The gage itself is the same ,but the thermocouple is too long, as I suspected. If you order an Isspro kit, be sure it has either an r650-8 probe(this one is adjustable to any length you want) or an r650-s(this one is 1" shorter and is made for smaller trucks). I am exchanging my thermocouple tomorrow at the place I got it.
Hope this helps someone that is about to purchase one to avoid the delay and confusion. Happy Truckin

The threaded weld-in collar is only for installing in the thin exhaust pipe. If installing pre-turbo or aft turbo in the heavy elbow ,just drill and tap with the appropriate size. Several instuctions for pre-turbo are listed here, I would suggest reading at least 3 or 4 of these.
Mine is aft turbo ,in the elbow, was very simple/easy to do.

Hi Guys, Just installed my Isspro guages, now the question is: Where do I tap into 12v for the lights? I know its #5 fuse but did you tap into a wire behind the fuse or did you find a fuse with the pigtail wire to make access? Lou

lou,
you can either use a fuse tap at the fuse box (this is what i did) or tap into the light inside the ashtray. Either way you will mantain dim control. I also swapped the bulbs to green so they match the dash. Good Luck!
