Well, not a first time owner but not sure where to post. It's been about 2-1/2 years since I got rid of my last Cummins. I felt OK about it at the time because it was just about the time the cost of diesel went up, and I enjoyed the hemi with an auto. First time for an auto trans in about 15 years.
Anway it's time for another diesel, this time a used truck to be used as a tool hauler, the ultimate plan within the next five or so years is to remove the body and use the drivetrain for my toy, probably a late 50s or early 60s Suburban.
I have had several, I think, common problems with my previous Dodge trucks. Transmission and injection pump in a 94 3500 at 85k miles. Front axle in an 03 2500 at 45k. Front axle twice in an 06 2500. Everything except the transmission was covered either by the original or an extended warranty. My experience with other makes is limited so I don't know what kind of problems Fxxd an GM owners have, but there seem to be some things w Dodges to watch out for. Having said all that, I'm looking for some input.
I am considering a couple of different trucks, a 98 2500 4x4 auto and a 93 2500 4x4 stick both with well under a 100k miles, both with very decent sheetmetal. First I'm wondering if Cummins warrants the engine up to 100k miles on both of these trucks, or if they have some kind of time limit? The 94 injection pump was fixed under that warranty. Then, I would appreciate any thoughts on either of these two configurations, I'm not much of a gearhead, but I know there a issues to be aware of (Killer dowel pin,
bad blocks, weak auto transmissions) but not sure which problems are common to which years.
As I've said, any input is appreciated.
Can't wait to smell the exhaust again!
Thanks
