First cummins swap. 1980-1900 looking for more info.

E250 4x4 5.9 Cummins Conversion

Wondering if anyone can offer some advice about the 4cyl diesel that Isuzu manufactures for the NPR trucks. I have the opportunity to pick up a complete engine and would like to know if they are considered a "good" motor? The one I'm looking at is a '93 vintage. Any idea on what they're worth? I figured it might be a good engine for a 1/2 ton pickup. Thanks to anyone with info!!!

3.9 npr engine into cj7 jeep

PM sent.

I too am working on using an isuzu 3. 9 TD engine, I am working on getting it into an 86 cj7, getting it hooked up to a 5sp is going to be the challenge, because it came with an auto behind it. I have been told it only came with a Jatco transmission behind it. If I can keep the T-5 manual transmission from the jeep and somehow mate it to the 3. 9 then I will have . 86 final in 5th and w/ 272 axles, I should have about 1600rpm at 60mph and about 1850rpm at 80mph. Sounds good to me for high way speeds to work and back. :-laf

I drove several of these in box trucks, and we had 1 that was a 5 speed. the rest were autos. One trucks' engine grenaded with 5,000 miles on it. I beat that 5 speed to death, and it ran good (for what it was) We constantly overloaded them trucks.

Anyways, I just wanted you to know there were some with 5 speeds.

I've had 6 over the years. They are not as well built as the Cummins, but parts are everywhere and cheap. I've had one go 400k miles. I've burned a few pistons too, and it cost about $800 per hole for a rebuild. Love to see one in a Jeep!

Great news

I just got a deal on another engine, this one is a 4bd2tc, so it has about 175hp / 330 flb. The really good news is it is already a manuel so I am thinking of just dropping it in until I can get my transmission mated up to the engine I already had, the first engine was bolted to an automatic and I am mating it to a t-5 manuel so it was going to take some time to get the parts made up. So, it looks like I maybe driving a 2wd version for a few months but, it will be biodiesel poweredOo. , I can smell the french frys already:-laf .

there are some good threads from the land cruiser guys about it at 4bt swaps and ih8mud... I have one in my shop that was a factory Isuzu reman but scored up the #1 cyl pretty bad... :( It is a great engine though, super quiet, a little peppier than the 4BTs and smoother and a little more 'Japanese' which is nice. Lower overall torque and higher HP because of the shorter stroke. I think goes up to 3000 rpms easily. . When we fired up this one I was wondering if I should have put this in instead of the 4BTs I have done. . You can adapt with the link posted above...

Anyway, here are the threads...

Well I got my NPR truck towed home last Fri. with a tow dolly, pulled by my 3500 Dodge. Boy, what a sight. I went the back roads just to keep it real slow and not get in a big hurry with such a big thing on the dolly. I think in the next week or so I am going to try to get the engine to start up while it is still in the NPR truck, just to hear it run and see if I have most of the parts it will need to have transfered over to the Jeep. I found a deal on another engine and transmission but I have to get the time to drive several hrs to go get it. So, in the mean time I am going to get the engine pulled out of the NPR and get it ready to start making adapters to mate it up to the T-5 that came in the CJ-7 Jeep.

3.9 npr

I found something interesting yesterday. I was looking at another later model of npr GM W50, I asked the guy at the shop where it was at if he knew anything about the transmission that it had in it and more to the point about the adapter ring between the engine and transmission. Well guess what, it had an Allison transmission and it was bolted up with out any aditional adapters or anything else. So, that means that if I can get the right part #s we maybe on to a way to put a nv4500 or something else made in the USA behind this little 3. 9. I am going to try to get more info about these engine rings from GMC truck or Isuzu.

3.9 isuzu

Well, I have some more good news to share. I had an hr or so last night b4 it got dark, so I thought it would be a good idea to see if the engine that I have in my little NPR truck would at least turn over. It had been about 7 yrs since it was on the road, at least that is the last insurance card I could find.

I was very surprised to have it fire up and run smoothOo. as soon as I jumpered the starter ( the transmission is missing, so there is no neutral switch). Now on to getting it pulled out and dropped into the Jeep.

Good luck with the project Tim. I haven't had any luck finding a local b3. 9 Cummins, the isuzu might just be what I need for the 88 Dodge Power Ram 150 I picked up a while back.

Keep us posted.

I used to drive a '92 model at work, we ran the crap out of it, loaded with the box etc, we usually ran about 12k, it would get 15-16mpg with a mix of city and highway at that weight, excelleration wasn't that great, with lighter weight it should be a real gem in the fuel department, only problem I remember having with it was the shut off thingy went bad and we had to get that fixed

Would a C-Series 8.3 L Cummins fit in a Isuzu NPR ? I want to make a pseudo Dakar T5 Truck using an Isuzu NPR as a base vehicle. Thanks in advance for any thoughts, opinions, or answers.
