Wow - what a replacement for the OSPREY.....

M35 with 5.9

I am looking at a 1990 4x4 Trooper with a V6 to drive in the snow. I was just wondering if anybody has one or has heard anything about their reliability. The body on it is real tight for a 20 year old vehicle. Any opinions are much appreciated.

If I remember correctly, the early Isuzu Troopers were initially manufactured by Honda for Isuzu. Basically a Honda Pilot or something similar. Should be a fairly good vehicle but I must admit I don't know much about them.

If that's the square vehicle with a swing-out tailgate, that is an Isuzu-built product. They were highly regarded in their day. The V6 I believe is a GM engine- and not one of their best ones. Today, now that Isuzu has been out of the passenger vehicle for some time, you should consider it a complete orphan as far as parts are concerned. Personally, I wouldn't pay much more than scrap value for it.

There not that bad of a Vehicle we own a 91 rodeo and yes it has a gm v6 but run's good just do your Mat on it and you should be ok as for part's after the cash for clunker's the pick a pat's are loaded with part's for em

I have an 89 trooper , but it has a 4 cyl. , it has been a very dependable ,tough vehicle, with mostly no problems, not sure how the v-6 is, I believe 90 was the first year for that motor, it is a GM 2. 8, they used them one or two years then upgrade to a 3. 2 I believe. Other than the motor I can vouch they are good vehicles, they are built tough , more like a truck than the typical small suv.

Thanks everybody. I really like the old Trooper, but my wife has found a '99 Jeep Cherokee that she likes a lot better. If we get it at least it has an inline 6 under the hood. :-laf

The Honda Passport was built by Isuzu and gave Honda a quick entry into the SUV.
If Honda sold them, that's all the endorsement I would need. As far as the Jeep, all
things being equal condition wise, I'd take the Isuzu, provided you have access to parts.

MUCH better engine! The 4. 0 inline 6 is tough! The 2. 8 GM is a VERY weak, very unreliable engine. I had a 1987 GMC Jimmy for a short time with that engine. It did not have the power to pull its own weight, with an automatic trans and the AC running. There was not a chance in hell of ever passing anyone!

Well, we didn't buy either one. The man that had the Jeep wouldn't negotiate on price much, so we're still looking.

I have a 88 trooper with the larger 4 cyl, 2. 6 L. It has 250,000 miles on it with no issues and no rust, squeaks, or rattles. I changed out the auto hubs to manual also acouple of sets of brakes several batteries and a radiator. Thats about all.
It has taken me everywhere I needed to go and more importantly got me back.
I bought it used in 90 with 36,000 on it for $9000. Today the tires are worth more than the Trooper.
