A Cummins Christmas Poem Revisited

Colorado Emissions Testing

Finally got back out there this afternoon and the verdict is that the piston skirt broke. Allowed piston to cock and twist. As you can see there was a lot of sideways force applied to the rod and piston before it exploded.

Truck is a 2003 Kenworth W-900. Work order shows close 997,509 for mileage, don't know how many, if any, overhauls had been done.

Truck was accelerating uphill, driver pushed clutch in to upshift, shifted, let clutch back out and KABOOM!!!!

More carnage, 3rd picture down notice the twist in the rod... . Almost a 1/3 of a turn from straight. Wicked force involved.

Clutch? In a W-900? I thought that was the "Inching Pedal?!" Hmmmm..... I only use mine every once in a while, sometimes only once or twice a day on short runs, and never when shifting gears... ...

First time I tried to double clutch and my trainer/father headslapped me with a profanity laden tirade about how only homosexual democrat, well nevermind..... ya I pretty well only float shift now. :-laf

Was it ever found out if the engine had any overhaul history? 990,000+ is a good number, even if it had an inframe at 500k.

Shame the block went, though. I'm gonna go out and say nice things to our ISX, maybe give it a hug---it's a shade over 460k right now...

:-laf Yeah, my old man's the same way. I'm getting that way. Yeah, 900k is a lot. I'd bet it had no overhaul, or it probably would have stayed together. I've got several Cats and older Cummins well over a million, but they've all had majors but one, and it's prone to use a little oil. And on cold mornings, it's..... well..... Thirsty. :D The local parts store has some generic starting fluid called "Thirst. " I saw it and ,, I had to have a few cans of that!!! Even got one on the ol' 875 Versatile!!

From what little I've seen of the 600s, they're VERY similar to the old KTA 500 engines, which were not as long-lifed as the old 855, but still good engines, doing what they were designed to do. The venerable 855 is still bullet-proof, ISX or N-14. Just remember, if it's not a Cat, it's a ... ... .

That's what happens when you go to school to learn to drive the big boy toys :-laf I have always figured my left leg was strong enough I dont need to work it out anymore with the clutch pedal

Nice pictures... . keep em coming!

As for ISX's and K series being similar I am not sure how. . ?? besides the Cummins name tag. The ISX is double overhead cams, KTA has one cam and is pushrod, ISX has a one piece head, K series has 6 individual heads, ISX is 15L, the K series is 19 liters, ISX has Steel top pistons, K series have aluminum etc etc. the Detroit Series 60 has a lot more in common with a ISX then a K series.

Thanks,

Deo
