Hey Big Oil, Are Ya Listening??????

B5 in Monona, WI

Anyone ever think about putting badges off of a v8 or v6 1500 on the side of your truck to throw them off??? :-laf

If your still running a Cat, wouldn't a high Sulfur fuel clog this up prematurely?

A mechanic at Sill-Terhar Ford here in Broomfield, CO claims the "red dyed" fuel is causing "problems" with the Ford diesels & is advising against using it. Any comments on the validity of this claim? Or is this a problem particular to Fords?

During the recent hurricanes, the supposed shortage of fuel (or inability to deliver it) caused a few interesting things to happen. It was reported that the "off-road" ban had been lifted until a given date (the end of Nov. I think). Also during this time, myself along with several other CTD owners got tanks of dyed fuel out of on-road taxed pumps, at the regular on-road price. Now my question is, we have always been told that red fuel will dye your entire system, filter, tank, lines, etc. If so, how can this law be enforced after the use of off-road fuel is stopped. Our systems are going to be dyed and we have done nothing wrong. Are we just up a creek or is this law now null and void?

If you got dyed fuel from a station during that time you should have a reciet showing you paid the tax. I would keep that reciet on hand until you have run several tanks of clear diesel through your truck.

I have also heard that you can run red right now, and some will get it at the pump. That being the case, it will take a long time to dilute the big underground tanks connected to the pumps, so i would think that they can't do too much for a while anyways, even if they say you cant do it anymore, it is still going to take quite a while for everything to "clear" up.

I agree with the above poster that said the road tax is the most fair tax going. No problem here paying it.

I use marvel mystry oil as an additive. It is red. I only use 4-8 oz per tank 35 gallons of diesel. Hopefully this isn't enough to cause it to be red and get me in trouble.

Regardless I keep all my receipts now (after getting a batch with water) so they will show I've got legal fuel.

It can be different in different parts of the country... I've owned diesel engine trucks for 20 years... . have never had a no logo'ed truck stopped and checked... doesn't mean it couldn't happen... I'm just saying that in some areas of the country the chances are slim to none..... OTOH you've got a great example of an area of the country where they are checked all the time... .

I'm personally with the farmer that posted... . its a fair tax... . and we follow the law...

BTW we're about ready to make 500 gal a month of bio-diesel... got most of the gear collected and will start after the first of the year if diesel doesn't come down... our gasoline has dropped almost 50 cents a gallon in one month... diesel only 5 cents... .

North Carolina has now started dipping tanks on the highway. Was pulled by a "Motor Vehicle Enforcement" officer (looks like a State Trooper, but with more attitude) and he dipped my regular tank and my bed mounted reserve tank.

Filled up @ the "PILOT" on 85 in south Carolina, right out of the pump on the island -RED as RED can get. they said they were having trouble getting green. got my receipt-what are they going to have to prove to fine me? As too the question of red hurting the engine-NA!. do you think that a farmer who has just spent 200,000. 00 on a piece of equipt. and runs red is going to hurt the engine, ain`t gonna happen. my$0. 02

Install a locking Fuel Cap......

The Probably Cause (PC) issue can become important If the Area is PRIVATE. For example many (not all) farm sales are on private property - as long as your vehicle is there, they should have no reason to check - without PC. If public - different story.

I'm in a Diesel Technology class and we use off-road diesel in the test engines. We get it by the 55gal. can and it comes out to over 4 bucks a gallon! Go figure...

Out here on the central coast of California, a lot of my rancher friends get pulled over on back roads, usually just after leaving their property. It comes in waves- sometimes they are looking for DOT numbers on the side, other times they are looking for red diesel.

One rancher told me that when he got pulled over, the cop didn't dip his tank, he drained the water separator. I guess popping the hood implied consent.

Most likely because they get garbage fuel... I knew a guy who ran the "bottoms" from his home heating oil tank through his CTD... guess what, the VP44 doesn't like sludge... :D

Most of the time it is the result of them just getting the garbage that is in the storage tank... not because of the fuel or the supplier. Yeah, most farmers take care of their stuff, but I know several that would run a tank of water through their equipment because they didn't care.

Red fuel is nothing more than regular fuel with a dye in it... and no taxes added into the cost. I mixed the dye for Exxon at a Pennzoil refinery (yeah, figure that one out... ) as summer help... it only takes a 55gallon drum of dye to color several million gallons of fuel. And that stuff is N-A-S-T-Y... it doesn't wash off you, it wears off you.

And to add more about being "dipped", diesel owners in NJ occaisionally get stopped and "smoke checked"... you simply pull in and stomp the skinny pedal... if you smoke, you are issued a fine... ask me how I know that.

Nobody bothered me on my trip to ME this week... they were out in full force, but I must not have looked illegal. :D
