Monday blues, after falling on ice today, black pavement is asphalt! RIGHT? Not in Buffalo at 17 degrees. hurt shoulder bad but to the real problem. On the way home my 99 quit on the freeway. I coasted to the shoulder and turned the ignition switch off and back on, and no noise from the lift pumps. I jumpered the relay on the aux. lift pump, bled the filter, and truck started (this was after I had called a wrecker). I got the truck home and with 20 miles to think about the solutions. I then swapped the fuel relay for the A/C clutch relay, and the pump worked. I haven't driven since, but will drive to work tomorrow and see what happens. I haven't seen anything on the site about relay failures (110k miles now). Is there a heat or over load breaker in the system? I couldn't find any fuses blown.

I've got to drive back to Chattanooga this weekend to pick up my travel trailer, and don't need any roadside problems. Please, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me have 'em on this site or by e-mail.

Thanks all, Denny

Denny,

Relays can and do fail. There isn't a whole lot of external causes to make them fail. Usually just a failed relay. I would say the main cause of outside related problems is poor connections, corrosion, moisture.

There is no current limiting device in the relay, usually just a fuse or fusible link near the power source.

Monday Blues

Wayne - - Thanks for your answer, also Ted Jannetty confirmed your suspicions. The relay died a horrible death. When I bench checked it it worked fine, but we had temps of 17 degrees that day, then when heated up in engine compt. it died. I'm thinking about taking it to Georgia for cremation tomorrow. Swapped with relay for A/C compressor to get on road, and ordered a handfull of new ones from Wrangler NW and replaced several of them - just in case. No further problems!

Thanks for your help.

Denny
