Got a '99 and its all stock. A month ago it became difficult to start in the morning. Had to turn over a lot before it would fire up then the rest of the day it would be fine. Last week it finally refused to start altogether. Since then I replaced the fuel filter and it appeared the transfer pump was bad so I replaced that. Still can't get it started. I have fuel up to the VP44 but I can not get fuel at the injectors. I tested the Fuel Stop Relay and its OK. I checked the voltage at the connecting plug to the VP44 and it shows 12 volts on one terminal, 4 volts on another and 3 volts on still another.

End result is I don't know how to tell if I have a bad injector pump or a bad ECM or something else.

I bought the truck only a year ago and don't have any idea of its history. Has been getting good milage (21) and running smooth until this all happened. I did notice that the VP44 has been replaced in the past with a remanufactured.

Can any of you much wiser people tell me how to ensure what part is bad???

(I hate to think I might have to go back to my '76 gas dodge, 3 mpg #@$%!)

How do you know for sure you have fuel pressure to the VP-44 - or how much - do you have gauges? Sounds like either a serious fuel obstruction, or else time for another VP-44, or possibly BOTH...

Loosen 3 injector lines at the head, and crank it, you should get fuel. If you do, snug them back up and crank it. It should start and run rough for a little bit. When it starts, give it some throttle to clear it up. There was air in the lines.

If you cannot get fuel at the injectors, something else is wrong, get back to us.

You can go to a auto zone, they can read the codes, but the truck must go with you !!!!!!!

Can't go to Autozone... ... . at least with the truck. But it doesn't show any code faults anyway. I loosed the injector lines and cannot get any fuel there. Tried cycling the ignition lots of times, still no fuel. I do get fuel at the input to the injector just not any further.

When mine died the odometer didn't show any codes. When I pulled them with a scanner there were 3 VP44 death codes. You need them pulled, does anyone near you have a SMARTY?

You have to crank the engine over to get fuel at the injector lines. Here is a thread you might want to read. bg https://www.turbodieselregister.com...nsmission-1998-5-2002/74018-testing-vp44.html

buy the scanner at auto zone and pull the codes. My Vp44 just went and I bet that's what you need. I would never buy another 98. 5-2002 cummins again and wish I hadn't bought this one. note: after you read and write down the codes, erase them, crank engine some more, then read codes again. I got three faulty codes the first time and only one (deadly p1688) the second time.

I tried hot wiring the injector pump as suggested and couldn't get it to work. Makes it sure that it needs to be replaced.

Looking at ordering one from Midwest Fuel Injection (Diesel store.com) along with the FASS fuel pump, unless anyone knows of a better one.

Anyway thanks to all of the replys, saved me lots of headaches!

I am running a pump from M&D in Houston Texas. I would be happy to deal with them again. You might also consider looking into the Blue Chip diesel vp-44. Seems to be a good way to go.
