It's exhausting; why 3.5" for 89-93, but 4" for 94-up?

Seems to me if 4" is better for Gen II, 4" would also be better for Gen I; right?

I have a 31/2" exhaust on my 92. It's pretty tight between the frame and bell housing on back of engine, its also close by the transfer case. Is anyone running a 4" exhaust on a 1st gen truck?
