Here I am

I've HACKED the ECM

No guys it's not a joke.

I DID IT!

I was cheking out the whole engine wiring,
trying to figure out how things work with the ECM. Something cought my attention... .

Now, to make a long story short,
Today I've been able to read the maps stored into the ECM.

You can guess how exited I was.
Hell maybe that I'm only able to read them???

I've deleted the maps from the ECM, tried to turn the ignition key... . NO way to get the engine running!!

Then, I've stored the maps back to the ECM, et voilà, engine runs like before.

Guys I've GOT IT!!!!!!!!!! #ad

Now, I need to figure out which map does what. Then I'll need to understand how to modify them to gain what all of us want.

MORE POWER.

I'll need some new software to do that, more computer hardware, but it can be done.

Stay tuned, I'll let you know.

Later,
Marco.

P. S. The only thing that limits myhappyness a little, is that I can throw away all my boxes on which I was working.
I believe that an modified ECM is way better
than any add on box.

WOW Marco!!! You are a Super Sleuth! #ad

Congratulations... now how much is a new ecm going to cost me?

This has to be the best way to do the timing change, right?

Your scary smart, hope you don't start building weapons for the Iraqi's!! LOL

Cool, that is great! I'm a computer programmer and very technical person. Maybe I could help. What kind of device did you use to connect to the ECM?

I think anyone with the slightest clue about computers is going to be interested to see what Marco can do.

On the other hand, there have been some recent laws to protect things like DVD encryption that might apply to anyone who lives here in the states. And then there is that nasty EPA and the legal side of Cummins who has already mixed it up with a few in this forum... .

REGARDLESS,

#ad
RIGHT ON MARCO!!, VERY SLICK #ad

I don't think there is anything illegal about altering your own truck. I believe the problem arises when you try to sell something that is patented or copyrighted by others w/o their permission. I would love to work on this, this would be a cool project.
It is possible after modification that the truck would not be EPA compatible, but that would only affect those who have to do emissions testing for annual inspections.

I would be willing to give away the software to members of the TDR, if I were able to develop it.
Maybe Marco has other ideas, maybe he could enlighten us further.

Hey, I support the hobby aspect as much as the next person.
I just fear there are those might want to turn a profit on this discovery without considering their exposure... .

Yeah Marco, you might want to consider a bodyguard. bg

The humorous aspect of this is that Marco lives outside of the long arm of the EPA. I even have to wonder if Cummins wouldn't get a kick outta Marco's efforts. They surely are not figuratively taking meals with the EPA (friends). UNLEASH THE GENIE IN THE ECM MARCO!!! #ad

Hmmm. Maybe Mark C. might be willing to help you just for spite. #ad

He really did have the best uprate before DC & Cummins put the screws to him.
too bad

good luck on your project

Hey Mike,

That would be nice if Mark would do that.
BTW, that is an interesting cd changer you have mounted.

Way to go Marco! Now if we can just add a few megahertz to our ecm's will our trucks go faster too? Just kidding. Maybe after you re-write some ecm programs we can store them in our lap tops and connect them to our trucks and do all kinds of tricks! #ad

Keep up the good work!

Marco, I'm a computer consultant by trade and have done programming for the past 17 years. I also used to design motherboards and IC's in silicon valley. Let me know if you need any help with your project - I'm sitting here drooling thinking about it!

MARCO - we may have a probem with copywrongs(rights?) here. Might be called "reverse engineering" and against the legal beagles. Even tho u give/release it to u'r country persons (PC lang), it may be covered there in the "unwritten small print" that u bought with the truck. #ad

I hope we can get u into a "safe" house before the Liscense Nazais get u!! Yes, I am interested in your work and I hope we can figure out how to get around each and every issue that might cum up. (gads I hate the inspectors). #ad

Way to go Marco
Now, I have toyed with the idea of doing the same, but I have one problem, my computer knowledge stops at clicking on the internet icon on the computer!!!! D$mn!!!!
DO IT TO IT MARCO!!!
Let us know your results!!
DC and EPA and Cummins, go to H$&L, you guys can't make it good enough from the factory, let us make it good enough for us!!!!
What about those guys throwin blowers on full size rams and Dakota's, they get warranty coverage on engine repair, why don't we!!

You are a STUD! I want that hacker software bad! I am a control systems engineer / programmer by trade and have always thought it would be fun to try and hack the ECM. I never could find the time. I think it is great! Let us know what happens.

It really does say something that so many of us are engineering/electronic/control system/technical types.
I wonder if that is so true on the phord side?

GO MARCO GO!!

now we will probably discover that Marco is really part of an EPA sting operation..... #ad
(NOT) #ad

Marco-

I recall seeing something on Cummin's page about them stopping someone... ONE OF THE ?TS companies from "using their source code to recalibrate rams" and they seemed quite proud of said "victory". I did a quick search and could not find the article, but when I do I'll edit this particular post or add another if this one gets burried.

I'd wager you'll get their attention sooner or later. At least you'll hear them coming for you? LOL

Good Luck

BINGO!

Marco,
Don't think I would sweat DC, Cummins, EPA, Slick Stick Willie or anyone else as long as you are doing it for yourself. Otherwise, they should have had a padlock on the connector! Long as you aren't selling it what can they say? More POWER to you!!Besides, it is a long way to Italy just to persecute the only bomber in the country, although I will admit that our country has found a lots of crazier ways to waste money. ($800 toilet seats comes to mind).

A few years ago, Mopar Muscle or Mopar Action, or a similar magazine hacked the ECM in the Dodge Dakota... They wanted to get more power from the magnum engines, and they were able to read-write the codes, but never were able to modify them successfully. They never figured out what map did what, so when they modified one parameter, another one was out of sync and the truck would not run.

There wasn't any EPA or otherwise chasing them down - nor would there be, unless they started doing it for others.

Marco, why don't you tell us what you used to download / upload and what computer/software/hardware you used for the process. I'd like to see this for myself - as I'm a computer nut at heart (yeah, I even started and ran my own ISP #ad
and love playing with this stuff... Not to mention we have some very technically able members here on TDR...
