My 99 auto is continuing to suffer from the TC lock/unlock problem: Here's what I have done already:

redone ALL grounds and battery connections... . A-OK now

Installed quality batteries

re-routed alt. to battery wire and wrapped in foil and electrician's tape

BD APPS noise filter installed per instructions

new, high quality "quiet" alternator

new Timbo APPS, properly adjusted with digital multi-meter

At my wits end. I'm looking at installing Borg box and shaft and a built trans but I need to get this TC issue fixed first. I NEED to get this TC issue solved or I will ruin my new transmission. Ready to sell my ride and buy another, newer model but love my 99. 110K miles on the clock and the engine runs smoother than new. Very frustrated.

Any more suggestions? I need some help. :{

Same truck and same issue and same approach to the problem. This has also been a very frustrating issue for me. What finally worked for me (at least for the last year) was ditching the BD filter and installing a DTT filter. I was hesitant about this part swap as I thought both units accomplished the same end result, however at a friends insistence I tried the DTT filter. Not knocking BD, but installing the DTT filter finally fixed my issue.

I wish you the best with this frustration.

The charging wire for the alternator runs thru the harness down to the starter and then to the batteries. MUST verify the starter connections are clean and good.

The final fix on ONE truck, because every one is different, was cut the charging wire at the top end re-route it seperately from the rest of the harness. Fixed it for good.

I've heard a lot of people advising wrapping the wire harness, but I have never heard anyone say you must ground that foil to effectively shield the pulses from causing a problem. And you should grond it.

The foil just stops the magnetic fields of the alternator from inducing spikes by shielding it.

It won't hurt but the ground wire is not the source of the noise, its the power wire.

Ditto on the DTT noise filter, cheap, easy and "quick fix" going on 8 years 80k miles now - did this before I actually DTT'ed the trans abt 64k ago.

The BD noise filter came after the DTT failed to work. It was soldered as per instructions. Thanks for the responses so far! I'm sitting on my hands and won't spend a dime on my front end until the TC issue is solved. I'll buy an old beater gasser to hold me over until I get this sorted out. I'd hate to have to sell the old '99. I rode in my cousin's '09 today. Sooo nice! Oo.

PS All noise filters need to be removed to pass smog in CA. Is that a knucklehead rule or what?

The earlier model 2nd Gen’s are truly a pain in the A** in this area. My ’99 started doing the lock/unlock routine at about 30m miles and Glenn Thomas Dodge was at a loss in how to resolve the problem. Thanks’ to the TDR, I was able to (partially) eliminate the problem, but even to this day, I’ll get a (rare) momentary unlock occurrence, and then it goes away. I installed the DTT filter, did the Suncoast re-wire, wrapped the alternator wire, and even grounded the battery hold down brackets to the frame… and I keep the battery connections clean. Like I said, it’s rare, but it still comes back.

On a side note; are you serious that the CA. smog check doesn’t allow the noise filter??? My ’99 is coming up for renewal real soon, and unfortunately, I’ll still be a resident of this state.

Best of luck Soot'

A noise filter is not ilegal... ... ... ... but the inspector may think it is something else. Since it ties to the PCM wiring it may look suspect to a gasser guy.

Had similar issues with mine, but several answers skirt around alternator interference. It is easy solution, have alternator rebuilt(turn commutator, new brushes, bearings) Should see end to your problems. Cured mine. :):):)

My problems are escalating. Today I was decelerating at approx. 20 mph and I swear the TC locked/unlocked about 3 times in about 20 seconds. OD was off. That shouldn't be happening at such a low speed. The TC should be disengaged at that speed while coasting to a stop.

Somebody with more brains and experience should find these symptoms telling and could pinpoint my problem. I've not yet touched the trans. The 50 mph lock/unlock problem is still there also.

I will back this up..... My TC was the most infuriating experience I have ever had.

The DTT noise filter stopped the trouble cold.

Never once an issue after it was installed.

You guys ready for this one? My truck only does it when I use the delay wipers! If I use low or high speed wipers, it will not do it. Use the wiper delay and my TC will lock and unlock and drive me insane... ... ... . especially with my auto and E-Brake going down hill pulling my trailer. It took me a year to isolate to delay wipers but have never been able to source a repair... ... ... I have used all the above repairs and parts!

I wonder if wrapping the wiring in question in lead sheeting would help:rolleyes:

I'm thankful the DTT noise filter did the trick on mine - going strong on 7 years now.

after having my trans rebuilt $2800. 00 the shop took it to the dealer and they found a broken wire that was causing the problem. the dealer had the truck for three days cost $150. 00 bucks. would have been cheaper to go there before the t/c went in to destruction mode.
