Saturday, I boarded a ship in Savannah that had a 46,500 HP diesel. 10 cylinders with twin turbos approximately 8 feet in diameter. The engine was about 50 feet long. Thats the first 10 cylinder inline I've seen. Think about it... 4,650 hp per cylinder. I went in the control room to check a power panel and they had two new valves laying in there ready to install. The valve diameter was about the size of a basketball. There were also 4, 1000 hp Diesel generators. Gotta love it.

Operating range was 300 RPM max. Air start and runs #2 through Bunker C. Injector lines were stainless (like stainless brake lines) approximately 3 inches in diameter. Driveshaft was about 2 feet in diameter. Flywheel... . Engineer said about 30,000 lbs. She was a German built ship so I assume it was a German engine (MAN maybe) and I didn't get on the front end of it to see the nameplate cause they were doing some maintenance on #1 and #2 cylinders. That is usually cast into the front block facing. The chief engineer was proud of it and I was proud to see it. The Captain said that the companies newest vessel would be launched this year and would have a beam of 70 meters. That's about 210 feet wide. This one was 80 feet. I want to see the new HO version in the big ship. She'll probably run twin engines with variable pitch props.

Now that is interesting!
Do a search on ship engins www.fairbanksmorce.com
These will tun a whooping 400 RPM. There should be some pictures in there somewhere if you can get the site to open.
Fairbanks-morce was one of the first combustion engines produced.
I have never even seen one.
Tim

The Fairbanks-Morce is an opposed piston engine. Thats 2 pistons in one cyclinder and no heads. Some of the old diesel subs had them and the nuc boats used them for emergency genarators.

Now I am really confused.
I just thought I knew something about engines. Would you please elaborate on them opposing cylinders and where does the shaft come out at.
Also what other brands produced 2 cylinders ih 1 jug?
Don't laugh,I'm lost.
Tim

Alice Chalmers Marine used to make the largest compression ignition engine. Not sure the specs, but the pistons appeared to be about 6' in diameter.

Check out this web site it has some pictures and discriptions of the Fairbanks-Morse engines. If you click on the 1940's link it has a pretty good cross sectional view of the oppossed pistion engine that was used in the subs and also locomotive.

I jumped out of a perfectly good Cessna 182 at C. S. M Buddy Blue's DZ Tuskeege Alabama.
What year and month did you jump?
I'm still in student status. 21 jumps also had 7 statics. 1 reserve ride.
Buddy's doing ok. He still keeps um straight and gives regular a$$ chewings if you make a mistake.

I forgot to mention. The system is direct drive which means the engine is connected to the prop directly. The means, to go in reverse, the engine has to be stopped and cranked backwards. The timing is changed and the engine runs as well backward (counterclockwise) as it does forward (clockwise). The air start system doesn't use a starter but rather a direct air injection system into the cyliders which starts the engine rotating in the desired direction. Fuel is then added (#2) and then switched over to Bunker C (heavy fuel) which has to be heated to 250* before it is thin enough to be used effectively. They usually burn #2 in port because of pollution issues. Bunker C makes some smoke. All of the slow speed engines use Bunker C. Medium speed engines like the Cummins have to use the thinner #2.

JOHN E - I saw pic's of that engine in C. H. Wendel's book on Allis Chalmers. I can't remember the number, but displacement was given in CUBIC FEET!!! Yes, No replacement FOR displacement... ... .
DENNY... ... ... ...
