Jacobs Exhaust brake

When I bought my truck one issue still open was a exhaust brake. The DEALER quoted $1800 parts and labor? What have YOU ALL been paying??:-{} $1200 for parts and the rest was labor. The sales manager asked me to check prices and he and I would discuss the issue again.

I didnt "dick" around on the cost of the e-brake installed. Had a gud enuff deal going otherwise. The dealer added 1800 to the figures installed for it. Am happy with it and think (with help from a certain person) we found the minor problem I have/had. Switch problem cutting in/out. But this was after 7k+ miles.

So you paid $1800? i thought it was suppose to be a DEAL with purchase of a new truck.come on guys post what you all paid. I thought it was around $1200 if I'm wrong so be it but want the best deal I can get. Its not often that on new autos you can get the deals that are out there. I want full advantage to the last penny. Feel its the consumers turn right now.

The $950 and $240 was about what I thought I had been hearing when everyone was waiting for them to come down the pipe line. The original price I thought was in the $850 range and then changes were made and a price increase. Not $1800 to $2100.

I ordered mine in September received it in November and because I have a business I got my Jacobs (had to wait awhile) for $299. 00, and that was to be installed by dealer for that as well. NO I didn't let them install it, I did it myself! Instructions that came with the unit are excellent! Shortly after the price went up & up & up!

Like Wayne, I paid $299 for the brake and let the "dealer" install it for another $300 or something like that, ordered on Nov. 11 when I took delivery and recieved in Feb. , Dealer tried to hit me up for the price increase but had to inform them in no certain terms that the thing was already bought and they can kiss my hairy, well you know, sorry but the current price is as you stated. :{

A local Dodge dealer told me "about" $1,100 parts and "about" $400 to $450 to install. Went to some of the local diesel shops in town and they said they would install the brake for $250, less if I put in some gauges at the same time. One guy at a muffler shop said he would install the Jake brake for $200. I guess it pays to shop arround.

I got mine for $1075 and installed it myself. $300 to install sounds like a fair price, 4-5 hrs @ $60/hr. $1800 sounds a bit high, offer them $1400 and see what they say.

I agree with Fireman, I would offer $1400. I would go as high as $1500. $1800 is a bit high IMO. The dealers that have put them on should have it down pat by now. Be sure to have them run the switch cable through the shift boot, looks a whole lot more professional that up the stalk with ties as is shown in the directions.

Took delivery of our 2003 HO 3500 SLT 4x4, 3. 73, SRW, 48RE this week. What a beauty. Just got it home yesterday--waiting for Jake Brake to be installed. Cost $1200. Dealer gives 10% discount to anything you buy for the new truck. We nearly ordered one earlier--then backed out. The fleet dealer decided he liked the way we set our dream truck up and put in an order on the last of the 2003's. Let us know it wasn't too late--took awhile, but we decided to go for it.



QUESTION: How do we get information on the operation of the Jake on a 48RE? We had a PacBrake on the '97 5 speed. Also need to find info on the torque/horsepower curve--where is the "sweet spot" for towing. It's hard to get info out of DC!

You DO KNOW the trans will not be warrantied if a failure because of the exhaust brake don't you. It has NOT been approved with the 48re and wont until sometime in 2004

Your dealer should have told you that an exhaust brake has not been approved for the '03 48RE's and will not be until the '04 models. The early MY04 models will have the hardware and will need a software change to be compatable with the Jacobs brake and the MY04. 5 should be all set according to Carlton Bale.

Thank you all for the quick replies! The dealer DID NOT say anything about not using the Jake Brake on the 48RE and they installed it before delivery. We wouldn't have purchased this truck if it wasn't Jake compatible. Should be an interesting conversation at the dealer on Monday! We went through their fleet manager for this purchase. No plans to trailer for awhile so it won't be used. Will get a copy of this thread to the dealership. We did talk to Cummins NW about J brake installation--they said theycouldn't do it onthe 48RE but didn't tell us why--we were lead to believe it was just a "turf" problem--Dodge preferred to do it. Food for thought.....
