If my memory serves me correct, somewhere I read that a jake break could be put on our engines with a little head work. If I am correct, how much is a little head work?

Robert

if they did

If you could put a loud jake brake on a 5. 9 (ie engine valve opening) brake on a 5. 9 Id pay 2500$. . But I think you have to get into big motoros like m11 and up to have the actual Jake brake. You can put the ehuast break (ie buter fly in the outlet) on the 5. 9s and the 8. 3s I think... some one please correct if i'm off.

and if some one has a 5. 9 head that will accept the loud one give me a price!

A real Jake brake is a compression release that occurs at the top of the compression stroke. The 5. 9B isn't capable of this type of engine brake, it will take an exhaust brake. The exhaust brake is a butterfly valve in the exhaust system some where. Jacobs Vehicle Systems makes all kinds of engine brakes, to include the exhaust type. Jacobs Vehicle Systems contends that any brake they make is a "Jake" brake, that will get you an earful from any "Trucker", they'll tell you a Jake is compression release only.

It's a shame Jacobs dont offer a "jake" I would buy one in a heart beat and Im sure a few other people might buy one too LOL, nothing beats the sound of a jake well maybe the whistle of a turbo :D

if someone developed an engine brake for the 5. 9 cummins, they could retire to the bahamas in 6 months! unfortunately for us 12v guys, I'm sure they'd develop one for the 24v before they would the 12, but it'd be REALLY expensive due to the RPM band these motors see compared to a big motor... engine brakes are very sensitive to lash and event timing, and if everything's not synched up perfect, it can reak havoc on the valvetrain...

the biggest problem is a lack of cam driven injectors... without that you're kinda dead in the water.

but yeah, I long for a button on the shifter... coming down out of the mountains, I can "hear" it in my head... that beautiful song coming out of the 5" straight pipe bouncing off the walls... :(

forrest

We do build a "Jake" for the ISL, the 8. 9 big brother to the "C" 8. 3 engine. Just pull the "B" out, put in a ISL, with a jake, factory rated to 400 RV HP, figure out how to hide the radiator and charge air cooler somewhere else, (engine is a tad longer in length) and hang on. Smoke the tires going forward, and slide them going down hill... .

Sounds like a cool project for a tow rig for the dragster... .

They don't make compression brakes for engines under 10 liters.

jerrethomas hit the nail on the head - the Detroit 3-53's can be found with true compression brakes. 159cid of pure terror!

The Detroit 50 series (4-cylinder) can also be had with a compression brake.

TDR member Batman works for a company that dealt with a TRUE COMPRESSION BRAKE for the ISB Cummins. He designed some packaging for it so that it could be shipped around for R&D purposes.

The general consensus is that a true compression brake would work 'too well' on on unloaded pickup truck... you'd be locking up the rear tires all the time. To me, that =

All you would need is a selector switch for 2, 4, or 6 cyls. That would cure the skidding. :D
