All - Had the pleasure of visting the Jamestown (New York) Engine Plant last night. JEP is responsible for building the heavyduty 11 and 14 litre engines. WOW. Amazing. The facility was HUGE and the engineers I spoke to were at the top of their game. Although they didn't have much to say about our 5. 9 litre specifically they certainly assured me that it's every bit as much a Cummins as the big boys are. Actually got to see an engine placed in the test cell, started for the first time and run up on the dyno. The 11 litre made 407 hp peak, and get this 1407 ft-lbs of torque!!!!! They run the engine for about 5 minutes at varying loads and speeds. Checked for leaks and certified it "fit for duty" I inquired if they do this for all engines including the 5. 9 litre and they assured me that it is policy for all engines. Wish I could have taken some pictures and posted but they were real sticklers about photography. Understandable. Oo.

Sounds like it was fun. I used to work at Caterpillar LEC (Large Engine Center) in Lafayette, IN. Got to see the big boys run, engine blocks (12+ cylinder jobbies) as big and in some cases bigger than our entire trucks. :--) The concrete was measured in feet thickness not inches to support the weight of the machines that did the boring, milling and such. When the big engines were in the test cell you could feel the concrete vibrate, you could see it in your coffee cup as you held it, hear in everyone's voice if within 20 yards of the cell. Simply unbelievable to say the least. We had multiple test cells around where they could run in anything from base engines (B's) all the way up to complete gen set packages (these were the big boys - 3600+) I was one of the unlucky ones :-laf and got to go out and work on them when we had a wiring problem that was not found in our tests for the control panels (I was in custom controls dept - EET). Sorry for me they moved the controls division down to just south of Atlanta or I would still be there today as I loved to be out there working around those engines.
