I have a 93 Dodge W250 with 5 spd manual xsmn. If I come to a stop in a parking lot and need to shift into Rev. to back up, shifter will not go into rev (or any other gear). the only way I've been able to get the shifter to move is cycle the transfer case lever from 2w to 4w. this takes several to many trys to get the shifter to finally get into Rev. Also when driving and shifting from 2nd to 3rd if I do it gently the shifter doesn't want to come out of gear easily. I have to leave truck in 2nd, and make a more aggressive acceleration and shift to make the shift to 3rd. Any ideas how to fix?

Syncros in the transmission are going sounds like you need to double clutch also could be some bearings going out ,On your t case might be your shift rails , best fix is to do a nv4500 swap or a 5600 swap

Could also be your pilot bearing or your throw out bearing.

In this situation, if you shut the engine off will it go into the gears OK?

Sound slike synchros or the throw out bearing not fully disengaging clutch. I would go with synchros. Very common for the G360 getrag.

When was the last time you drained the transmission and changed the oil?

The Getrag is not an inherently flawed unit as has been widely publicized but it does suffer if neglected or if run too hard for too long at an insufficient fluid level.

Drain your transmission and replace whatever is in it with some 15W-40 or heavier weight Mobile 1 synthetic motor oil instead of the too thin stuff recommended by the factory. Also, jack the right side of the truck up at least two inches so that when you fill to spill through the plug you slightly overfill the gear box which will put more lubricant where it is needed and provide more liquid to pull heat away from the bearings when operating under a load.
