Meet Maine 's New Governor

I think the forcast for here is just a few degrees below 0 and wind chills in the -15 to -20 range. It will feel like a heat wave compared to that.

We are getting a little piece of that too Mike. Its currently 9 degrees and dropping like a rock. Theyre forecasting -10 by morning and the wind has been strong enough the last few days to clean the dead stuff out of the trees. A man was killed when a large branch snapped and crushed him in his car as he was sitting at a stop light. Theyre also calling for 20" of lake effect snow. Weve got the fire burning bright and the generator on standby ;)

Our wind chill today was -50, our daytime high was -12, our overnight low will be -25 or colder. This will be the third night in a row of -25. Not near as cold as it used to get years ago!!!

When the temp gets to the -30/40 range, propane will not flow:eek: The larger the tank the better, in real cold temps depending on the flow/use. A small tank can't vaporize fast enough and will freeze the regulator even with alcohol mixed in. Pour hot water on it and it will work again. I sure don't miss those Montana days:-laf

I've been riding my Goldwing almost every day here on the south plains of Texas. Took a 125 mile ride Saturday afternoon just to enjoy the pleasant afternoon. We do have some cold days though.

Looks like we will get to -30 tonight. Just went out and filled the stove with wood again. 1:15 AM

Guess I shouldnt complain about -9 then should I  14" of new snow according to the local weather man. Just got in from plowing, and to thaw out the whiskers.

They just showed on NBC news that areas around Syracuse could see several feet of snow over the next couple of days. Some areas could see near 4'.

They combat that here with large tanks, for gensets I have seen as many as four tanks hooked up.

Several years ago my wife was working with a contractor who was building a new log cabin / home. The power lines had not been run, as luck would have it a propane genset was to be installed as part of the construction for back up power. It was set up early and connected to a single 200lb snowman type propane tank so that the contractor could have power daily. As winter set in the genset was left on for power and heat.

As the weather turned cold the genset would be conked out every morning when the crew arrived. Called the genset repair, they would arrive and find the starter was cooked. Install a new starter, get it going. Next morning the genset would be out again. Replace starter, repeat, repeat.

After a week of this someone finally figured out that the line from the single tank was freezing up because the genset drew so much propane while running.

The genset would quit and the auto-start would just keep trying to fire it back up until the starter fried.

Hooked 3 more tanks to the genset feed line in parallel, problem solved. ;)

I don't know what that fiasco cost, but it wasn't cheap... ...

We are burning a little #2 fuel oil, propane in the evening and wood around the clock. Almost forgot, K-1 for the Monitor heater in the garage.

Woo Hoo... ..... :D

We are supposed to be very close to or at -30 tonight as well. As you know it is really not that bad when one is ready for it.

The sounds of the lake at -30 below are fun to listen to, almost like whale noises when it is really making ice. It will wake me in the night at times.

Mike.

Robert, we're dang near neighbors, I'm wintering in scenic Watford City, ND.

You must be in or near the oil patch. Lots of people from this area are working in that area. A good friend of mine is working on the natural gas line from canada to supply gas for a small refinery. I think his man camp is in Tioga.

Even though it gets almost as cold here, our dryer air makes a big difference. I was born in Mankato, have relatives in both Brainerd and Bemidji, not missing Minnesota too much... say hi to PB for me.

Yikes! Coldest it's been here all year! There's a BIG and NASTY system settling in! Here's what I got.

Said hi to Paul for you. Last weekend was our polar plunge days where they cut out a big chunk of ice from Lake Bemidji and people go swimming (very short swim) and we had a PB look alike take the plunge too.
