I just installed the Jardine turbo back 4", I love everything except the drone at 2200 rpm I tried the angle iron no help. I tried several clamps small help. I have tack welded the joints no help. Now what I want to know is if I move the muffler forward will this indeed help? It will be a pain since I welded the joints.

Fought this for a couple of years. Last May I stopped in at Stan's Headers in WA. Out of desperation I had him put on the muffler he uses. It is a Donaldson I can get you the #. Solved the drone and made towing a pleasure. I heard noises that I had not heard in years, the radio:eek:

A couple of local members have changed to it after driving mine.

It is about 40" and you will need to fabricate hangers ( no problem if you can weld. cut out old muffler to accomadate longer muffler. Local cost at Freightliner was about $50. 00.

Donaldson # M085171 muffler. It is 8" diamiter and is straight through design with a open chamber 8" dia. about 1/3 of the way through that trap the sound wave pulses and eliminates the resonance.

I had read that some member were getting drone with a Jardine system. So when I ordered, I ordered a Magnaflow resonator (smaller muffler) that I mounted about 16" inches in front of the Magnaflow muffler.

No drone and very quiet exhaust (sounds like stock) and no performance hit.

I have the same drone

and I have a Diesel Dynamics exhuast, I love the sound but could do with out the DRONE. When I called DD about the drone they said " what drone" no one else complained:{ . So I'm off to find a solution myself.

How does the Donaldson muffler sound?

How Common is the Drone?

I just bought a Jardine's 4" exhaust, and now I see a post about a drone at 2200 rpm. How common is this to the jardines system, and how bad is it?

I would appreciate some feedback before I install it. Thanks in advance.

Turbodog,

I don't think it is that common of a problem on the Jardine. I didn't want to install mine and have to take it apart at a later time if I ended up the drone. I figure it was better just to install it once and be done with it. I ordered the Magnaflow resonator from Jardine. I believe it was like 35. 00 plus shipping.

Check out this thread about drone and the cure. Has the part number for napa SS band clamps.....

I did not use the Epiflex tube and mounted the resonator about 18 inches (can't remember the exact distance) in front of the muffler.

Hope this helps...

I got the Jardine 4". ,and the dreaded drone,it starts just below 2200,and donesnt stop until 2500-with 4. 10's it gets annoying, since i drive at 2300 or so on the highway. Ive been speeding a bit more since hitting 2500 eliminates the drone:) .

I have the 3. 54 gears so the drone starts @ about 78 mph, it has kept me from speeding, but the drone is only loud when under load. Last week I pulled some horses to the mountains and it was so loud you couldn't hardly have a converation. It is a must fix.

I called pinnacle performance but they were closed and would not let me even put in an order for a resonator till monday. So I will take my business somewhere else. Including any of my 7 friends that are slowly upgrading there CTD trucks.....

Thats word for word what I got from DD, I guess they will have to change their answer soon.

When I pressed a little more it was reveled the owner has added a 14 inch muffler 12 inches ahead of the other. My guess is the tubing is thin and needs more room for expansion under pressure.

If you find an answer please post I would like to fix mine too, short of tearing it out and starting over.

I'd give Jerry Jardine a call and give him the chance to make it right. I talked to him for about 30 minutes before I bought my exhaust and he does care about customer satisfaction.

I saw a post by Garret about how when he installed a Rip Rook's exhaust on his wife's truck, the muffler was mounted on the first piece of straight pipe after the down tube and it did not have any drone.

He ended up installing a Allied muffler on his Jardine system on his truck and took care of the drone which had been fixed with a resonator before.

I think the physical location of the muffler has a lot to do with the drone. Going with a resonator will fix the drone and make the truck sound like stock, but still give you the samel level of performance as a single muffler system. It is just that some/many guys like a louder exhaust. I like to keep the truck quiet for those long trips.

Disclaimer: not affliated with any vendor. Just a happy customer.

Yes, give the vendor a chance to correct the problem.

Considering that it's a *long* pipe, yes, the location of the muffler should make a bif difference. A shorter run of pipe will resonate at a higher frequency. Elementary physics. Put a short length of 5" in the middle of that long 4" run, and the drone should vanish. I might stop at a local truck shop and see if they can do anything like that for my 4" JRE. Or I'll stop at JRE my next trip to NE. Either way, I'll let JRE know if the long pipe is the 'cause' of the drone.

I had the drone at 2200 rpm also. I added Dynamat Extreme to the back cab wall and the drone is gone. You have to pull out the backseat but I think it was well worth the effort. There is no sound deadning at all on the back cab so I thought that the Dynomat was the best route to take.

members should know that there is a Jerry Jardine (Wyoming)system and Jardine Products of Calif. system. They are two separate companys. Both are great products. I have the Jardine of Calif. system and I do not experiance a drone at 2200 rpm?

Just an update on the exhaust drone. Some trucks have it and some don't. Some with DD, BD, Pinacle and Banks have experienced it. Some with Jerry's have had sucess with the resonator and some haven't. some with the drone have moved the muffler forward with success and some haven't.

Some with stock exhaust have removed the stock muffler and/ or resonator and experienced it. If you dont have it, great: but don't assume that just because you put a resonator on at the time of system install that you cured/ eliminated the drone: You might not have had it to begin with as most trucks don't.

Mine was cured by just replacing the Pinacle muffler with a Donaldson in the same location. My truck is quieter towing at all rpm than when not towing. A couple of other TDR members in the area have replaced their mufflers ( several different exhaust vendors ) with the Donaldson with the same results I have experienced.

What ever works for you is best for you, there are many fixes, it is just a matter of finding the one that works on your truck.

Good luck

" When I called DD about the drone they said " what drone" no one else complained"

That is what Jerry said when I called him in the early spring of 2k.

Devildog, the Donaldson souds just like Jerry's muffler under load but with out the drone and as quiet as stock at idle.

Thanks, Shooter

One question, What does a Jerry's muffler sound like... . does it compare to a Walker muffler that I think I got from DD? Thanks again. Theres a Freight liner dealer down the street from me:D

Not trying to start something here but I do read of a lot of drone problem with the Jardine system on here, Granted as far as #'s go, it is probably the most used 4" out here. Some Jardine dealers even have the 2 muffler options posted on their sites "for customers who want to avoid drone problem"

I'm only asking 'cause after I put the new injectors in, my freeflowing 3" ain't going to be enough no more and I'll buy a 4"(leaning towards a Bully Dog system right now) but the last thing I need is a drone problem. Even if the manufacturer takes care of you, it's still annoying to have to deal with problems like that. Any toughts?

Again not flaming, just asking/wondering,

Glenn

I Wonder

Maybe it depends on the way the engine is set up. I have the DD turbo back and if there is a drone I don't know about it. It sounds just like some 18 wheelers out there.

It would be advantageous to ride in each others trucks and HEAR what the other is listening to. I'd like to know what the drone sounds like so I know what I don't have to put up with:D
