No XJ was ever sold with a V-8. There may have been a few development vehicles built and employees longing for them to make it to production, but it was never available from the factory. SJ (the "old" Cherokee body/nameplate) did have 304/360 options, as well as the ZJ and WJ Grand Cherokees.

The XJ is a great vehicle. It does a lot of things well - if I had to own only one vehicle, that would be it. Fortunately, this is America and I'm allowed to have more!

It's not at all uncommon to find a 4. 0L auto with 200k miles. The vehicle may be a bit small for a 4BT, though. Don't discount the aftermarket support of them - Jeepsunlimited.com has 34,000 members. I bet you may even find diesel converted XJ's there and LOTS of other places on the internet and on the road.

Hey, Todd G has the idea! I was just looking at two of those trucks today. One has an auto ( allision?) and one has a manual. They are like 290 CID! Looks like a sweet little engine to put in a Dodge Dakota! I've been thinking about that for a long time. It sure looks like it would fit in a Dakota. If only Dodge would offer one. My brother put a cummins in a 79 one ton ford. Stacks, flatbed, air ride, moved rear axle back farther, allison 6 speed auto, Ford factory leather buckets, welder, aircompressor, ge

nerator, the list goes on!
