After sitting in my garage for 20 years this one is coming home soon. I built the 350 a long time ago from a bare block, broke the transmission a few years later, had kids, mortgage, and the Jeep wouldn't pass AZ emissions so it sat. The trans is an early GM NV4500 with the 6.34 1st gear, the engine is a pretty mild build but was just updated with EFI. The Jeep has under 50k miles on it, even less on the engine. I have a shop in ID that is doing the cleanup/emissions stuff to get this thing back on the road and I'll be flying up later this month to drive it home. What could go wrong in a 1000 mile road trip in a 36 year old vehicle? :-laf

It's a work in progress but it's getting close.

Throw "Collector Car" insurance on it and you will no longer have the AZ emissions requirement. AZ doesn't feel you need to start your collector car just for emissions and has exempted them.

Do a local 2 day stay near the shop shakedown before your long trip to catch the little things. Less to go wrong on the old rig than a new vehicle...

This is exactly what I was looking at doing, is that a original scrambler or a conversion?

That's funny because that was one of the first questions I was asked when I got to their shop. Yes it's original.

Thanks for that, I was going to do collector car insurance anyway. There's no way a traditional insurance company is going to pay me what it's worth or what I've got into it.

The company is supposed to drive it for a few weeks after it's "done" to shake it down. But an extended stay in the Tetons just to be sure certainly isn't a bad idea.

Awesome. Congrats. Mine is getting some love the last couple of years after sitting for several as well. I like the original restoration/ look.

Nicely done! That's a clean Jeep. Did you put a back seat in it? What are you running in the rear for suspension? I'm running YJ springs in back but I don't think I'd ever get that much flex out of them.

I originally built it with a half cab and no rear seat, but added the seats, full cage and full top so our boys could ride in it too.

I'm running spring over axle suspension with Rubicon Express 1.5 inch springs. I've made a few more mods over the winter, so I'm interested to see how much better flex I get.

Is that an EGR valve I seen under the air cleaner? I think I remember my SS350 1967 Camaro having a valve like that, and a piece of a metal pop can got stuck to an opening in the gasket between it and the manifold! Or maybe it was a beer can piece. At any rate, I should have kept it.

Yes, it's getting EGR and catalytic converters to make sure I can pass emissions. I don't mind the cats that much but the EGR will need to be modified to be visual only at some point.

Did it fail the last AZ emissions test? If so it does have to pass one more time. (There may be a time limit where a fail no longer matters for a collector car.) Otherwise put the collector insurance on it and you don't need to pass, period. FWIW it's a risk to attempt to get it to pass because if you do fail you have to pass before it gets exempted.

Technically it's never had an AZ emissions test. I used to register it to my brothers house in Flagstaff, no test required up there. Unfortunately he moved. Logically I don't see why the type of insurance I have would matter, USAA or Hagerty for example.

That said I believe you're right. Time to call Hagerty...Thank you for that. Maybe they haven't installed the cat converters yet, too late for the EGR.

That's a beautiful rig Grant. I've got an FJ40, it's a long ways from your Scrambler as far as condition but it is a fun little rig to just putt around in. When the kids have flown the roost and I've got more time and money, she'll get the frame off that she deserves.

Thanks JR. I had a friend in my high school days that had an FJ40. I wouldn't call it "sporty" but it was built like a tank. Good luck on your restoration.

Nice work and a beautiful Scrambler but should have classed it up with an AMC powered V-8.....

It had a GM engine in it from the day it was born, the incredibly underpowered "iron duke" pontiac 4 cyl. The only upside to that engine is that it had the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a small block, that made the choice easy.
