Volkswagen TDI - Seeking Information

My friends, I come with a third hand question from a neighbor and friend... said I would go to the one group in the know. They have a 1990 vintage Jeep Cherokee with the drivers door lower hinge pin worn to where the door won't mate to the strike plate. Because the hinges are welded to the body (but bolted to the door) they were told by a licensed mechanic here in MA that they were looking at $500-800 to remove fender and unweld/weld a new hinge. Really?!... i looked at it, the two hinge hasps are sound, its the pin thats shot. Can't you grind/drive the pin out and use something like a Dorman replacement w/ bushing?? Have any of you guys/gals been there before? Your insight greatly appreciated. Also, since the hasp mounts to the grill edge of the door, could you sandwich some washers between the hasp-door to raise the heel back up into place??

most if not all of the ones i have seen the upper hinge was pulling out of the body, if make sure its in the right spot before getting too deep, may be able to turn the pin around
