This oughta p--- you off!

I know there are a few jeep guys on the board and I have a question. What can one expect to pay for a front window for late model jeep wrangler?? My girfriend has one and the window has about had it. She called around to most of the glass shops and the quotes are from $400 to $600+. This seems way out of wack for a piece of flat glass. I know I can replace the front window on my Ram for less than that. One of the places finally said they would cut a piece of flat auto glass and install it for $160, I thought that seems more reasonalble. What do you think?? Any drawback with going with the non-oem glass??

Does anyone make a decent looking wind deflector for Wranglers, I want to try and keep the rocks off her new windshield.

I was in the same situation with a CJ7 one time. They quoted a price over the phone and I thought it was far too high. When I went there a few days later to have them cut one, I spied a Jeep windshield in the shop. (When I told them over the phone that I was going to have one cut, they had ordered it by accident. ) I asked them to look up the price again and they said about $120 (had misquoted over the phone). I also installed it myself, but don't know how hard it is in a Wrangler. I have heard the newer Wranglers are more expensive and you may not have many options in Alaska.

A few things about having one cut: If it's not tinted (the one in the Jeep now is what they call "tinted") it will be difficult to see out of with the sun low in the sky. The thickness of the glass could be different if it makes a difference for installation. And, it might not be legal (maybe not a big deal, but make sure it has the flexible membrane sandwiched between the glass). I don't know if the wind deflector will make much difference for rocks.

The Wrangler windshield is bonded to the frame with urethane, while the CJ has a rubber gasket to hold the glass in (much easier to work on). If they cut a glass, make sure they black out the edges so that UV cannot get to the urethane- if it does, the urethane will deteriorate and the glass could come loose. I'll look up the price tomorrow and post it tomorrow night.

Well my GF talked to them again and asked all the correct questions. The glass they cut is auto glass and it has the membrane between it so it will not shatter. They said the only difference between the OEM glass and the ones they cut is the black plastic on the outside edge of the glass. I am assuming that this is to block the UV's like mentioned above. They said they would paint the edges if she wanted them to. She also called a local 4x4 shop and talked to them about the window. They suggested covering the entier windsheild with some clear 3M film. Said that this helps keep the rocks from chipping the windshield.

Better check your state & local laws first- that would be illegal in most places. You didn't state what year Wrangler it is. For an 87-95 YJ, an OEM glass would cost $285. 69. For a cut flat glass, $184. 69 For a 97-02 TJ, OEM is $562. 36, cut flat $ 191. 97 All prices include labor and tax, and are for the Houston market. YMMV.
