Asking for a friend who wasn't told about this annoyance when buying a new 2021 Jeep. Yes it's a diesel. No, this isn't going to cut it here when it's over 115F out in the summer. I can't stand it myself on the service loaners.

What would be the best way to permanently disable autostart so it stays running?

FYI, when it's 115° (or way less than that) it does not shut off, or if it does, not for more than a few seconds. There are other parameters it looks at that will keep it from shutting down. But for $99 sounds like an easy way to eliminate it.

It's a bit different for each vehicle, but this is a basic list. Also disabled if diesel engine is in regen.

Stop/Start Not Ready Tow Active

When Tow/Haul mode is active, ESS is inhibited.

Autostart is triggered if Tow/Haul Switch (if Equipped) is pressed during an Autostop.

Stop/Start Not Ready 4Low Active

T-Case is in 4Wheel Low mode.

Present on vehicles with T- Case (4Wheel Low).

Stop/Start Not Ready Too Steep

Indicates grade above calibrated threshold to allow Autostop.

Triggers an Autostart during an Autostop if grade threshold is above +7% or below -10%.

Stop/Start Not Ready Cabin Cooling or Heating

Indicates HVAC demand via the CAN C Bus.

Stop/Start Not Ready Max Cooling or Heating

When HVAC max button is pressed by customer. Indicates HVAC demand via CAN C signal.

Inhibits Autostops while pressed. Triggers an Autostart if pressed during an Autostop.

Stop/Start Not Ready Front Defrost Selected

Indicates Front Defrost active.

Triggers an Autostart during an Autostop and inhibits Autostops if active during engine running.

Stop/Start Not Ready Turned Steering Wheel

Indicates steering wheel is being turned.

Inhibits Autostops if present during engine running.

Triggers Autostarts if active during and Autostop.

On the Edge you just pop the center console apart and put this in series with the wiring that the auto stop button connects to. It then remembers which position the button was in when you shut the vehicle off. My first experience with auto was with a Dodge econo box loaner when water pump recall was being done to the RAM. And I go really in Phoenix you want the engine to shutdown at every light.

These new vehicles are getting so many nannies that soon they will be fighting with each other. Nanny number one declares "I am in charge of that!" and nanny number two says "how do you like me now, I just turned on limp mode!" Na-na Na-na Na-na

It's literally a single button press. Like, we're literally talking a fraction of a second to touch it with a finger. Are people really so lazy that they'll pay big money for a device that presses a button for them?

I had ESS on my Jeep Gladiator and I'm actually disappointed that it's not on the Ram. I saw easily documented fuel savings when ESS was in use. I hand calculate and store all my fill ups in the fuelly.com site and without ESS my fuel economy dropped a solid 8%.

And I don't want to hear the "auto start-stop is bad for diesels" argument. Excessive idling is what's bad for a modern diesel. More regens, more fear of fuel wash-down, etc. ESS is a great feature, and it is particularly nice when paired with the EcoDiesel.

As a follow up, I am REALLY happy with the Autostop Eliminator on the Edge!!!! In the Phoenix area why would you what the engine to shutoff at stop lights. Heck it was shutting off positioning the vehicle in the car port.

I drove a Chevy Cruze rental with the auto stop feature. How hateful it was. I figured out that when you come to a stop light put the transmission in neutral and the car will keep running. This is an old habit of mine taught by my father - always put the transmission in neutral when sitting for an extended period. It is easier on torque convertors and on a manual it is easier on the throw out bearing.

Because torque converters fail so often from keeping the transmission in drive? If you have an 8 speed in your 1500 it does one better than that. It actually slips the B clutch to reduce drag on the engine when your stopped to increase fuel economy.

Thanks for sharing the positive results you got in MPG.

Now don't assume others want or will put up with this shoved down their throats with a inconsiderate "can't remember" button that has to be pressed every single engine start all day with many stops. They do not care if it was FCA or the Government iD10T's demanding this via CAFE or emissions.

Fuel economy is simply not on the radar of some people, period. A $100 bill when the vehicle costs $50,000+ isn't even a rounding error. Clearly there is enough demand the company put this into production. Had they noticed this it would have cost the vehicle sale, period. The break even for the extra diesel engine cost is noted to be 281K miles from Motortrend.

You fail to consider starting a damn diesel requires a good high power starter and most cases two good batteries. It's best not to shut one off after you get it going till you are where you are going. It's lots of fun after the race between the battery failing or starter burning up to sit at an intersection with all the people going by waving without all fingers extended. If someone doesn't plow into the stranded vehicle. Most rather it quits or fails to start in a nice parking lot or their garage. Additionally the low bidder FCA battery and short life of them out here due to extreme heat that OEM's ignore IS a factor to people here.

I tell you what: give me your number and I will let her call you and explain in nauseating detail how not happy she is over this. Start off with lazy - I dare you. :p

It really doesn't matter if one is concerned with fuel economy or not. Government mandates drive these kinds of technologies. The manufacturers don't do it just because they can. And sorry to inform you, if she doesn't like the brand she has, she isn't going to find relief from many other makes. Almost everyone today has Stop Start in their vehicles, so it isn't going to cost anyone any sales.
Just wait till the only thing out there is battery power.

The plug and play Autostop Eliminator I put on the Edge ST still allows the button to function. It just remembers the setting it was in when the engine is turned off and when restarted it provides the same mode. So if you are dropping it off for dealer service just push the button before turning it off. They will not have a clue that the device is installed inline with the button and out of sight buried in the center console. Some devices plug into the OBD2 port and mess with the programming. I like how they did this for the Ford Edge much better. It is like a magic finger that remembers to push the button for you.

Now something I hate, there is no way on the Edge to stop it form auto locking the doors once the car starts moving. That and the 8.4 and EVIC on the 2015 RAM was much better than what Ford provided on the 2020 Edge. On Edge forums I have suggested the Ford designers should all be given a FCA product with the 8.4 with the connect 7" EVIC to drive for a week, as the Sync system sucks.

Does nothing of that work?
