30K Maintenance time coming up Need to decide

Well Friday morning on my way to work I think I had a Jelling problem. I had been plugged in all night. Here is what happened when I left home it was 17 below, I have 7 miles of country road and then hit a freeway. Right as I entered the top of Weber Canyon(for you locals) my thermo in the truck showed 14 below. I had just passed a semi and was running at 70 MPH, the EGTs and boost where right where they always run. Then the truck starts loosing speed no boost and EGTs dropping I pressed down on the peddle and nothing. It dropped to 55 MPH and then stayed there but still would accelerate. I was able to maintain 55 but no more for almost all the way down the canyon then all of the sudden the power was back. At the bottom of the canyon it was 5 above zero.

Just last week it was way warm only down into the high 30s at night and 65 during the day. It makes me wonder if they had already went back to the summer blend.

I have since added some Power system treatment.

Today the truck runs just as great as normal. Does jelling hurt any thing???

Dee, only your feet when it sends you walking. You had a classic jelling example.

You may want to make sure your fuel heater is working.

Lots of times if you are running winter blend or additive if there is water entrained in the fuel it will plug your filter even though the fuel doesn't jell.

It happen to me today!!!!

Dee. . The exact same thing happen to me today at 8:00am. Running up to Ogden through Park City, temp. was -14 truck started bucking loosing power cutting in and out. Stopped at Silver Summitt and added a pint of power system treatment, and by the time I reached Parley's Summit the truck was running fine again.

You shouldn't have hurt anything since you kept running... You need to add some power treatment at each tank full until the temps start to warm up. Don't rely on the truck stops for in tank additive. I don't know the exact answer, however, running your truck at 70MPH at -14 degrees with the wind chill factor I bet we were around -50 below or better.

Wind chill has no effect on inanimant objects. Wind chill is a another way of saying "rate of heat loss" It cannot ever get colder than the absolute temperature.

Thanks for the replies Guys. Additives here it comes. I've had my truck since april of 97 and this was the first time it jelled I guess i've been lucky.

Parcher, it's great to finally see someone else who understands windchill! I've discussed/argued far too many times the same *fact* you just stated. Wind chill does not apply to anything mechanical, like a vehicle.

Yup!

Windchill is VERY misunderstood as it relates to things mechanical. Windchill WILL cause a mechanical contraption to lose heat faster, BUT it cannot get colder than the ambient temperature no matter how hard the wind is blowing.

Been pretty cold here the last couple days huh. I know, I know you Dakota boys have us beat hands down, but anyway you've struck just about the only disadvantage in a diesel. Proper maintanence and additives will help keep that problem solved. but sometimes, its just too damn cold to leave the house!

Been eyeing some property in porterville maybe we'd be neighbors one day.

I'm actually in Milton just down the road from Porterville. Which side of the valley? There are alot of CTD trucks up here. In more ways than one it is a pretty cool place to live... .

Run additive in temps below -5!

No matter what you buy for fuel (treated, straight #1, blend... ) I would always add some additive. It really helps counter the dry effects of #1, helps protect you from weakly treated fuel that could cause you a problem.

Many of us "up" here run straight #2 and additive. No blend, treated fuel, or #1. It works, it does not gell, and you keep all the power and economy as in the summer time.

This is the only time I add additive!

drawson, make sure you change your fuel filter. Last year I was on my way to DIA at 4:00 am when mine jelled about -10*f and when I checked the fuel filter it looked as though it was coated with wax. Ever since I've run the Power Service products to ensure no jelling. I guess it works because two days last week when I fired it off it was -22*f, and no problems.

Milton rings a bell, I've been through it many times. I saw about 5 acres for sale off the highway before you get to the resevoir. Getting tired of the city life, I live west of ogden and I'm tired of the BS. Driving to work would sure be a pain though. Keeping my options open though. How are the schools out that way?

Mine jelled a couple of weeks ago. The bad thing is that I had the Power service add. in my tool box for weeks, just didn't put it in. Its had the additive in it every since.
