Thanks, TDR Staff

turbo pressure vs. volume

Larger exhaust housing= less mpg.

I have never liked Jiffy Lube, nor do I trust them. I have always done my own oil changes until I purchased my 05 CTD. I have a free oil change for 7 years at two per year. When I take my truck in to the dealer, I stand there and watch them and ask questions.

I typically use a local Freightliner shop (they have an RV/automotive department) in AZ simply because I went to school with the owner. Their technician is first rate and quick. I pay a little more but the piece of mind is worth it. I don't do my own because I don't want to have to fool with the old fluids. :{

I do all my own work unless it's out of the scope of my tools or experience. I don't trust anyone unless I personally know them.

Old fluids? I put my old engine oil and transmission oil in the fuel tank. The rest I dump off at the dump. I have maybe 5 gallons every couple months.

I've been there! It wasn't Jiffy lube but another other big chain. 15 years ago I drove my nearly new pickup from Colorado to Washington, flat towing a fullsize bronco. shortly after I got there I had the oil changed. Of course they came back and suggested that the differential oil and trans needed service. Truck maybe had 10,000 miles on it. I looked at him kinda funny and said NO. Afterward I went out and checked the grease zirks. They were still covered with old road grime. Went back in and asked them about their procedures for greasing a truck. "We wipe off the zirks with a rag then inject the grease. " yeah right! Manager took the truck back in and gave me a free service for next time... same thing happened when I went to redeem my free service coupon.

Now I go to a place where it's not odd for a customer to stand by the bay door and observe the goings on. So far so good.

crooks

The Oil Changers that our company trucks are serviced at cheats the customer by putting the wrong mileage on the window sticker so that you come in sooner than the 3,000 miles. They have also told me that I needed service that had recently been done based on fluid analysis. Give me a break!

I have had them show me my clean (under 5,000 mile air filters) and try to tell me that it's the invisible dirt that is hurting the fuel economy and engine. Then there is always the $29. 95 additive that will clean my engine out.

Sad thing is that many people are just plain ripped off by their own ignorance. Sounds like some kind of class action lawsuit should be filed.

I would think that the fuel filter would get clogged up with all that extra dirt. Does the truck run any different?

Me too. Except that I still do it myself even if it's out of the scope of my tools or experience. ;)

I do most of my truck service, but still take the Honda Accord to the dealer or the lube shop because it's too low to the ground to mess with. When I used to use synthetic oil in my vehicles, I was somewhat cautious about bringing in my own oil as I was afraid that they could take my oil and keep it and put in their bulk oil and I'd never know the difference. As far as I know, it never happened to me, but I was still concerned and would sometimes watch to see if they used it.

It's not just Jiffy Lube. When I lived in Illinois I used to got to the quick lube places so I did not have to change the oil in the winter. I used whoever I had a coupon for.

Most of the time they did a good job but once I was at a quick lube place and stood with my truck while they checked everything out. They told me to wait in the lobby and I told them I would stay with the vehicle to make sure it was serviced properly. The guy forgot to put the oil cap back on and did not grease the front zerks. I pointed that out and he took care of it.

A buddy of mine got a new V10 in his Ford because of Jiffy Lube. I guess they drained the oil and forgot to put any back in :-laf

Now that I live in a warmer climate I only take my vehicles in for warranty work.

Jiffy lube, quick lube etc etc etc,,, they have drop outs, scum and just plain stupid and slip shot incompetents working for them. Did I miss anything?

That business rips off American’s daily for millions a year is false charges. If you take your car to one of these places,, watch them perform the service.

I witnessed them filling Mobil1 bottles with regular oil at one of those rip off lubes…

The fat guy was lining them up ,,, and pumping straight from the overhead dispenser,,,,

There one that was on it's way out that Ferd did'nt have to pay for. :-laf

I used to work at Sears doing oil changes, tires, etc.

I messed up once on a Subuaru and drained the transmission oil instead of the engine. It came in because the oil plug was leaking a bit. Well the manager had me come over and look at it, I said I'd drain it and see what was up. Well the whole time we were looking at the transmission.

It sounds stupid, but the transmission "pan" looked like an oil pan, and it also had a filter like an oil filter next to it. When I drained it I noticied it was really clean, but didn't think anything of it, figuring the oil hadn't been changed that long ago.

Anyhow, I sealed up the plug, brought the car down and put 4 or 5 quarts in it. Fired it up, checked the oil, level was good... sent it on it's way.

Customer called up saying the car was smoking real bad and transmission was making bad noise. .

Yup, Sears ended up paying for a new transmission. Manager took the blame though, but it was my fault as much as it was hers.

Mistakes happen, though when you do it on your own truck, all you can do is get angry at yourself.

Nate, I made the same mistake on a neighbor's Subaru except when I saw the color of the oil I knew what I did. He was cool with it because he needed to change the trans fluid anyway.

 My stepson works at a Jiffy lube. He said the guys he works with know nothing about cars, he knows more about cars than the manager ;)

Even though he has offered to give me his employee pricing on stuff, I still buy Fleetgaurd, and do most of my own work right here :)

It is a shame,,, there are guys that try,,, but like everything else,,, to many bad and stupid apples.

There is a Big "o" tires here in El Dorado Hills,,, there crew does great work. Oil changes,,, tires, shocks,,, no complaints and totally professional.

Anytime you use one of these chain type places for whatever you need, be it oil changes or fast food, their business is set up for volume, the more you run through it in a day, the more profit. This model requires that they use the cheapest labor available, thus you don't necessarily get a crew full of shining stars. Most of these kids are just out of high school or it is their first job some of them try hard and use their heads and well some of them got nothing between the ears but nasal cavities.

As for my $40000 truck, I will take it to someone who does this for a living and is known to me to be a pro and competent.

Mike

I do all my work myself, too. After I've done it once, I usually have the tools and experience, so it's no longer out of my scope. Buying tools, and learning is fun. :D

My back packing partner took his toyota to one of the chain lube places in BZ, MT this winter. They screwed up with the filter and the oil ran out... ... they bought the truck and now he has a newer Toyota.
