Hey Rob
One of my customers brought me a set to install on his truck, after unpacking them and reading the istructions I refused to install them, I don't like drilling holes in the rocker panels, the instructions where poor, way to many brakets and braces, I like simple and effective products, like the Westin truck steps, available in black or chrome, they bolt on in 20 minutes using brakets that bolt to your body mounts, It's just too easy! and they look great!

Thanks Ted.

I looked at some at the TDR Nats. and they looked OK, but I have not made up my mind. Also really like the Putcos on Sam Memmolo's truck. They are a quality looking piece.

I have bought a couple of their stainless steel rear bumpers and they were of good quality. I bought all of my stainless trim from Inovative Creations. Quality is/was good, easy to install. I did have a problem with one of the rocker panel pieces. It didnt want to fit behind the quad cab door on the driver side very well. I made them a template, they made me another piece and sent it right out.

Speaking of Putco, they make a nice stainless steel tailgate cap. I put one on my truck. The rubber seal on the bottom of the camper shell hatch rests against it. I've seen those rubber seals rub the paint off the tailgates on other trucks.

Rob:

Go with the Putco. Good stuff. Might cost more but all their stuff is high quality.

Looks like everyone made it back by the some of the names showing up on the posts!

Nice to get back to 8 people per square mile country!

Hey Jerry,

By the way -- thanks for the pix. I am getting some loaded a little at a time. Just need to have a 34 hour day and I'd have it licked. !!

All,

Has anyone tried the Sidewinder retractable step for trucks?
It looks interesting. If it fully disapeared when retracted, I would have to have them.

Andy,

With a Quad Cab, do I need two of them per side?
Can you see it when retracted?
Why not one on your driver side?

I suppose you could probably mount a single step a little farther back than it would normally be mounted. This would allow people in the front and back of a quad cab to use the same step. It wouldn't be in the most convenient position for either person, but it might work.
The step is visible when retracted, but it does not stand out. Mine is the older black step, the ones made today are of polished aluminum. I personally think the black looks better.
I didn't put one on the driver's side, because I don't need it for myself, and I didn't want to spend the money on it.
By the way, Kodiak used my truck in their advertising brochure. I haven't checked out their website lately, but they used to have a picture of my truck on it. The ad agency installed one of the new polished aluminum steps on my truck temporarily for the photo shoot. One nice thing about the new aluminum step, the corners are rounded off. My step has sharp corners on it, and I've rammed my shin into it more than once while working on the truck (vacuuming, etc. ) with the door open. I've thought of putting a switch under the dash to cut power to it so it will stay up when I want it out of the way. Right now, if I'm going to be standing and working on the passenger's side with the door open, I'll remove the fuse. No more bruised shins!

I forgot to mention this: Check the links page, I think it's www.kodiaksidewinder.com

I've had a J&J running boards for over 3 years now and they still look like new. I did not do the installation so I cannot tell you how difficult they are to install. I do know it pays to shop around on price. The price can vary several hundred for a set of them.

I installed steps for a motor home on both sides of my '95 (see pictures in issue 13) because my wife is handicapped and can't step up more than ten inches and that's a struggle. These steps are 24" long and have two treds so that the maximum step height is about nine inches. I used dome light switches to cause the steps to extend when the door is opened and retract when it is closed. If anyone is interested in this sort of thing, e-mail me and we can get into the installation details. Chrysler has a handicapped reimbursment program and paid for $750 of the cost. So I was only out about $30 for mine (plus my labor of course).

I have had a set of JJ Stainless running boards for about a year now. They are good and strong. You can jump up and down on them! I purchased all 4 pieces including the ones between the cab and the rear tire. I actually use them as a step for loading stuff on the rack that is on my pickup topper.

The mouning brackets are a little bit like an erector set and could be improved. There lots of different pieces to bolt together but they all fit well and are strong enough. The instructions were adequate. Installation took about 5 hours! Also, the brackets are only painted with a light coat of primer. I had to give them a good coat of paint so they wouldn't rust. What good are stainless running boards if the mounting brackets rust away.

The looks were just OK until I painted the toe kick satin black instead of the shiny stainless. This is the one inch vertical section that goes between the running board step and the rocker panel of the truck. Now I think they look really sharp.
