Alright guys..... In the end of March I got let go from my job. They got bought out and ended up getting rid of 7 people in the shake down. I had been there for 5. 5 years. They said I "showed a lack of attention to detail. "

Well I've been looking around and I'm not sure if I want to go back to spinning wrenches. Granted I'm quite good at it and have been Mercedes-Benz Certified for the last 5. 5 years. Last night a buddy of mine came up to me and said the small shop (2 techs) that the Lead tech at the shop he's at is leaving. So he talked me into comming in and talking to the owner of the place.

The shop is literally 1. 5 miles from my house. Nice and close. They are offering me $2 less an hour than I was making, but I won't have union dues. It's also just a punch in type job. They don't use the flat rate system in this shop. They do quite a bit of custom exhaust and street rod work. They have Medical, and are willing to work around me going to IRP! Oo. It's shorter hours than I was working before (8-5vs10 hour days with a 45min commute) but I have work every other saturday 9 to 2 or 3ish.

My biggist worry is, I've been working on German cars for quite a while. My exposure to American cars is limited to my tech school training. What do you guys think? Should I keep looking?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Also having a job does not preclude you from continuing to look.

My two cents

I think you've been handed a golden opportunity to learn about American cars and thus improve your own value, especially with custom work. Heck we might see you on the next "American whatever" on the Discovery channel. Sounds like financially you'd be at the least, break even, maybe even ahead without dues and the shorter commute. If it were me, I'd go for it, learn, and if needed, keep looking.

Good luck,

Casey

Just think of the opportunity this will give to your new employer. Now when the stray Euro makes it way into you bay, the owner says; "I've got one of the best certified mechanics for german autos in Minnesota working here. "

Word of mouth spreads and soon you are back to working 10's 6 days a week, owner offers you a commission on top of your hourly wage and over-time, you learn to work on high performance gassers and soon are working 12's 7 days a week!

Naw... just kiddin around...

I agree with Coyle and Casey, oppotunity is there for the taking... . I think I just heard a KNOCK! :)

Here I thought I would have a job before school got out. I hoping for something related to what I'm going for. Where I live they want 5 yrs experience before they even talk to ya. I've been searching farther and farther from home. Looks like my best bet is in St Cloud on down toward the TC metro.

Sounds like yer talking about HiTech?

Good luck.

The Shop isn't that high performance Jeff... but this shop does alot of HiTech's exhaust work. It's called Mach 5 Motors in Ramsey. It's just off 10 and Ramsey Blvd.

Thanx for the advise guys!
