I want a Black (powder coat) Steel HD Truck chest. I saw that Jobox makes one under one of their brand names for our trucks that is 16 gauge steel 60" long 19" high and 20" deep (weighs 120 lbs) costs around $400. Looks like all of the truck chests are around these dimensions. I want a chest because I want it to set under or even with the bed rails. Anyone have one of these in their truck. How are they attached? Any other brands that you can recommend?

Pitbull:

I have a challenger box that is 8 or 9 years old brought over from my last truck and still holding up well. Just last month I saw that jobox one you were talking about that is a nice unit. Very nice. Weatherguard quality at least. My chest is mounted by using 2 2inch lag bolts of about 3/8 diameter. . I drilled through the box and the bed one in the front left corner one in the left rear corner. I wanted to be able easily remove the box when hauling big stuff. I drilled the holes before I had the bedliner sprayed in but am sure it wouldnt make that much difference. Using the lag bolts with their coarse threads makes it easy to put in or take out. I have used this same setup for 8 years or so and never once has it come loose unless I unscrew the bolts and you don't need nuts on the bottom side. Has worked great for me anyway. Can literally have it in or out in less than 5 minutes by myself.

Barry, thanks for the reply. Where would you suggest I look for these chests? The biggest town I live by is around 150K people. Would a farm supply be a good place? I've been to the 2 truck after market places and they only have aluminum for big $$$. I want something heavy duty. Aluminum looks like it would get bent up easy???

Pitbull:

I guess I didn't catch all you said in your first post. Mine is aluminum and has held up well even with hauling rock in the bed. But if you are talking one of those heavy types that you might see at a construction site that fits in your bed home depot was carrying them. seemd pretty stout too. I think the brand name was green lee (they were green in color) but same type box as jobox. Jobox just came out with a new line of chests/toolboxes that are aluminum black powder coated that looked to be of high quality. I would say on par with weathergaurd and priced about the same maybe a little less. The aluminum ones seem to hold up pretty well and ony weigh 1/2 as much. My chest weighs 40lbs empty I would guess.

Pitbull,

I was also looking for a box like you. I bought a KNAAK box. It is pretty big and actually came with feet so that you could get forks from a forklift under it. I cut the feet off which placed the top of the box approximately 3 inches over the rail. I then had it rhinolined inside and out (this cost me 100 bucks). It looks great and should last forever. It is pretty heavy but I can get it out by myself. I found the box at a local construction supply store. I have approximately 400 dollars in the finished product, and have had it 3 years. Don't know what these boxes cost now though.

Later,

Kess

Thanks guys, Kess that is what I am aiming for. I found a heavy duty truck and construction suppy place that the local truck accessory store said should have what I need. Won't be open until Monday. Having it Rhino lined or Linex in my case sounds like a great Idea.

Home Depot Has these large thick black plastic, locking boxes with hinged tops I been looking at. I'm guessing the size is around 36in. x 24in x24in. I think Lowes and even Walmart has them. They are around 40 bucks.

Finding that the box that I am interested in is priced too high. It is a 16 guage steel box made by Jobox under the Delta name. But it only comes in white so I would have to pay to have it painted black or Linex covered and no one in my area has it on hand so I would have to pay another $70 for shipping. That makes a $400 box around 30% more. Not worth it to carry my juke with me. Guess I will leave the junk that won't fit behind my seats at home. I guess that since no one carries what I am interested in shows that I must have weird taste. :(

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I bought a yellow Delta Jobox at Lowes for about $200. 00.

Add two padlocks and you can be in a steel chest pretty quick.

It does sit about 4" higher than the edge of the bed but it also has forklift slots in the feet. I already have a bed high aluminum chest by Better Built. The steel chest makes a nice alternative to a gun safe for me.

Is your box the 60x24? That is a great price. For that kind of $$ I could spray paint it black and bolt it to the bed. :D I will go by Lowes today and see what they have.

Thanks

Chipstien, the reason I was staying away from aluminum was strength. In the winter I want to load this box with sand bags. I also want to be able to carry heavy things in it without bending it up. The Jobox is built from 16 guage steel. and the weigh around 200 lbs. Not worried about weight with a 1 ton truck. ;)

I have a Weatherguard black powder-coated aluminum 5th wheel (i. e. , even with the rails) box. I carry toolboxes, air compressors, hitch components, etc. and not a dent or scratch in it after 1-1/2 years. No leaks, no condensation problems. It just does its job! A little pricey, but (IMHO), you generally get what you pay for - or perhaps more accurately, you seldom get MORE than what you pay for.

JM2CW  YMMV :D
