OHC Fuel Mileage ---- what does it read

was going to check the oil cooler first before the head gasket, but can't find it, not sure if it even has one, anyone have any experience with these? thanks Bob

I think that cooler is for the hydraulics. Couldn't find one on there looking at the JDParts side of Deeres' site. I'll have to take a look at the backhoe at the farm. I think it has the same engine.

Hate to say it but its probobly your piston liners. They get erroded away from cavitation between the cylinders. I have rebuilt a few John Deere engines with these sympeoms and that was the cause every time. John Deere sells a coolent additive that is supposed to prevent this it seems to be working fine in our tractors.

thanks, so then if it is the liners, is it just combustion residue, or oil leaking directly into the cooling system from ??? is a rebuild on the way? thanks Bob

Coolant in oil is more common, than oil in coolant, usually if oring, or cavitation in liners occurs, youll get coolant in the oil. IT could be a crack somwhere in head?? Id sowly remove the oil pan drain plug, and see how much coolant is in the bottom of the pan if any. Does the oil look milky? If you have coolant in the oil, than its a good cance it is the liners, or the oring at the bottom of the liners, it also could be an internat crack in the water jacket.

Oil looks normal, not milky or anything, coolant had about two table spoons of oilly looking sludge in it, no bubbles when it's running (runs great BTW!) there is a separate cooler next to the radiator with hoses going to the rear, trans. or hydraulic I guess, I figured it was an oil cooler just because the oil pressure is higher than the radiator pressure, just bought this,it maybe one of those ''if it ain't broke don't fix it'' things. thanks Bob
