Breakaway battery wiring Q

Any experience with Diamond Hitch's Gooseneck products?

How far up from the bottom of the brake pedal do you have the u clamp mounted? I have to have mine so far down I hit it with my foot. Dont like it at all. If it is not down that far then I dont get full braking on the trailer. It seems to me the calibration on the potentiometer in the controller is calibrated for vacuum assist brakes and not my hydro-boost brakes (much LESS travel than vacuum assist). A picture of someones install that works right would be appreciated. TIA

I just went out and measured mine and I have 6. 5" between the pedal pad and the cable attachment clamp. I have a 98 with hydro-assist brakes and the Jordan works great.

I don't have a picture but if I have time tonite I can take one and PM it to you.

I measured my 2001 and I measure 8. 5inches. I measured with a straight tape measure from the top of my brake pedel pad to the bottom of the pedel bracket in between the two screws that hold it on to the pedel arm. I tow a 2 axel 7000# TT. The thing works perfect.

Mine is much lower thn either of yours. At 5. 5 amps I am leaving rubber. I pushed the panic button and set the controller for 5 amps, just below lockup. Problem is this, with normal braking (ie, stop lights or traffic) the controller only sends 2. 5 amps to the trailer, not enough to do any good. 3. 5 amps is where I can feel the trailer brakes start to work. I still think it is an issue of not having enough travel on the wire to the controller. With the brake pedal bracket 4" from the bottom of the pedal it works great, mild pressure results in 3. 5 amps and all the way down is 5 amps. Only problem is I hit the bracket with my foot.

Those of you that have it working, read the current during a normal stop, then drive on a straight road and push the panic button until you get the same reading and see if you can feel the trailer brakes grab. That is how I tested mine and found out the trailer brakes wernt getting enough current.

Perhaps there is a problem with my trailer brakes

Texas, Good braking on my TT is at about 2. 5 to 3 amps. You should first ck the adjustment of your trailer brakes. I'm sure you know that they are not self adjusting. You also want to be carefull not to have too much application to the trailer as you might overheat the trailer brakes. It takes some experimentation to get the best for you. Chris

Chris,

How many axles do you brake on?

Page 9 of the Jordan owners manual says 2 brakes=5-8 amps and 4 brakes=10-14 amps.

I have 4 brakes ( 2 axles with brakes)

I adjusted the brakes at the beginning of summer when I repacked the bearings. I'm not ruling out a brake fault here just wondering how many axles you brake on to get good braking @ 2. 5-3 amps.

Thanks

I brake on four wheels/ two axels. I think that you can get alot of variance between trailer to trailer. The 3 amp is for a normal stop. Panic stop... ... I NEVER LOOK DOWN at the controller:eek:

I would set it up so that you have adjustment both ways on the "volume "knob of the controller. I put the brake arm bracket on mine about where they said and drove the truck/trailer and did my own setting. I think that the amp #'s that they are showing are the total amps that the coils draw at full braking/skid. Checking the system this way when you hook up. It will show if you have a wheel that is not working... less amp draw. Chris

joden brakes

Just installed mine. Tested it Sunday afternoon. Works great. the cable is about 6" or so up the brake arm. Normal stopping is about 2. 5 or 3 amps. I don't brake hard in most cases. Full hard brakes will show a lot more amps. Used the red button to lock the wheels and then back off useing the red button until no wheel lock. I use the speed of 25 mph. durning testing. Might be too much for going down long hills. I will have to check that part later. it is so much better and smoother. Called Jordan to assist on installing and they were very helpful.

Based on the two of you I am drawing too much current (5. 5) for lock up. I think I will check the brakes and see if they need adjustment. Thanks

Texas Diesel, here is a pic (I hope) of my brake arm attachment.

I have four brakes on the trailer (5700 lb. dry wt. ) and have the controller set to about 7. 0 Amps with the red button fully depressed and under normal braking I'm drawing about 2. 5 Amps.

As I understand it (and I'll be the first to admit that I'm a real greenhorn) the idea is not to have the controller set up so that it feels like you're throwing out an anchor when you step on the pedal, but rather to have it feel the same when you're towing as when you're not towing. That's about how mine feels and it's a real pleasure to tow with this setup.

Ditto. My cable attaches well up the brake arm as well. I set the controller to 7. 0 amps with the red button fully depressed. This gives good, progressive braking on our 4-brake 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel.
