I am wanting to install a Jotto desk in my 2006 2500 SLT 4X4 auto and the Jotto desk rep tells me some of these truck have some sort of airbag sensor(s) incorporated with the seat mounting bolt(s). Is this correct? They offer a mount for the 02-04 truck that should work in my truck, if I do not have the sensors. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

Not exactly sure what Jotto Desk is, but I recently installed a Hotbox subwoofer enclosure that replaced the front seat center section. If you remove the middle part of the front seat, you will see a black plastic cover on the floor, slightly to the passenger side. Approximate dimensions would be about 3" x 4" x 1 1/4" high. You can pull the cover off, and see the aluminum module underneath.

Initially my plans were to relocate this elsewhere to gain clearance for the sub box. However, you'll notice that the floor of the truck is formed around this box, and there is a sizeable bundle of wires going to it as well.

I asked around a little, and the general concensus was not to move it. It evidently has something to do with seat belt lockup and/or airbag deployment. Some people indicated its location was very critical to correct operation, and moving it would jeapordize the function of the vehicle's safety restraint devices.

Some people had moved the location of this box on 2nd gen dodges (I think then they were under the back seat on the extended cabs) with no negative results, but it appears the 3rd gen design is quite a bit more complex. I opted to leave mine where it was, and put spacers under the sub enclosure to gain the clearance I needed.

Everything turned out fine, and I feel better knowing that passengers are protected as well as they can be in the event of an accident. Furthermore, I would hate to be faulted in an accident if it was found that tampering with this module had caused someone to be more seriously injured (or worse).

Hope this helps... Eric

Thanks for the help Eric. What you said makes sense... ... the sensor is probably in the way of the mounting bracket the way they have it designed. I just could not understand how it could have anything to do with the seat track mounting bolts.

A Jotto desk is an adjustable desk to mount a laptop on. I use it for a GPS mapping program. Here is a link.

Thanks again!

Have you looked at Ram Mount for your laptop mount. I mounted one in my 2006, no warnings about seatbelt/airbags. It mounts to the two front passenger seat bolts, its steady as a rock and supports my laptop wonderfully. The only issue was that they say to put the mount together, but when you do this, you can't get to the inside bolt. Stumped Ram-mount when I questioned how to mount it. The solution was to duct tape the four carriage bolts on to the base mount the base, then bolt the upright in place.

HGreen,

I wanted to go with the Jotto desk as I already have one in my semi-tractor, so I would only have to purchase the base and reuse the other parts. I wonder if my Jotto desk components could be adapted to the ram mount?

Eric,

I took a look at my truck last night and I do have the module under the center seat. It does not appear that it should be in the way of the Jotto mount though. I will have to look at the mount design again.

HGreen,

I looked the Ram mount base on the net last night and from the pictures it looks like it may protrude foward of the seat base a fair amount... . does it? Does it limit the forward seat adjustment at all?

Thanks all !

pirlbeck -- the Ram-mount does mount at the foot of the passenger seat and does protrude about 4 inches in front of the seat bolts but does not inhibit the forward movement of the seat on the track.

Pirlbeck, is your ram an automatic???

HGreen, the ram mount IS solid in the truck??

I have been pushing around putting a mount into my 06 automatic ram. I had a mounting system from L&E equipment in my 99' it worked well. but I havent worked with any equipment from ram or jotto desk for mounting computers. I worked with jotto desk consoles for mounting emergency equipment ( siren controllers and radios ) in fire and police vehicles. They did a pretty good job in that aspect but we did not use thier computer mounts.

thnx Jim

JDerrick -- The Ram-mount is solid as a rock in the truck and with the swivel and computer mount removed, it is not in the way of a passenger.

I finally got time over the weekend to install the Jotto Desk mount. It fits great and is rock solid. The only thing that I could see that the Jotto Company may of been concerned about as far as this install goes is that the service manual calls for replacing the seat mounting bolts with new ones and tightening them to a certain torque spec... ... all liability related I would guess.

I have pictures, but I do not know how to post them here. I do know how to email them if anyone is interested in seeing them.
